Charlotte Checkers News Release

Charlotte, N.C. - Nathan Gillies scored the game winning goal in overtime to lift the Checkers over the Columbia Inferno by a score of 3-2.

Both teams went scoreless in the first period, but not for a lack of effort as the goaltenders made spectacular saves to keep the opposition off the board.

In the middle stanza, the Inferno would get on the board during a two-on-one rush when Daniel Sparre got the puck to the stick of streaking defenseman in Patrick Wellar who found the back of the net on Checkers netminder, Curtis Darling. Later, Charlotte would tie the game after a bouncing puck that was shot by defenseman Matt Waddell hit the skates of Mike Bayrack and went behind Inferno goaltender, Todd Ford at 15:19. The Checkers would get the go-ahead goal after Jordan Owens shot from the left wing side was stopped by Ford but, he couldn't control the rebound and defenseman, Mark Smith skated in and fired a shot that beat Ford putting Charlotte up 2-1 at 19:19.

In the third period, the Inferno would tie the game at 3:51 when Steve McJannett beat Darling locking the contest at 2-2. Despite several great opportunities late in the third, the Checkers couldn't find a way to solve Ford and the game would move to overtime.

After Ryan Constant was hauled down to the ice with just under 30 seconds remaining, Nathan Gillies grabbed a loose puck in front of the Inferno crease and sliced a backhand shot over the sprawling Ford and into the net giving the Checkers a 3-2 victory.
