CHARLOTTE, N.C.-- Goalie Todd Ford's sterling 33 save effort wasn't enough to deliver his team to victory as the Columbia Inferno (9-11-4-2, 24 points) fell 3-2 in overtime to the Charlotte Checkers (9-8-0-3, 21 points).

The Inferno struck first at 7:20 in the second when defenseman Patrick Wellar collected a saucer pass from Daniel Sparre in the slot and slid a low shot past Curtis Darling's left leg. The Checkers would knot the game 1-1 at 15:19 when a bouncing puck deflected off Curtis Bayrack's skate and past Ford. The Checkers took a 2-1 lead with less than a minute in the second period when Mark Smith rushed the net, snuck the puck over the crease and upended Ford in the process.

The Inferno battled back to tie the game 3:51 into the third when Steve McJannet beat Darling from the near circle.

The two sides skated to a stalemate through regulation. 4:34 into overtime, Checkers winger Nathan Gillies won the game with a power move from the far circle, lifting the puck over Ford's stacked pads. Ford stopped 33 of 36, while Darling stopped 12 of 14.

The Inferno return to the Carolina Coliseum on Friday, Dec. 28 to host the Charlotte Checkers at 1:05 p.m. The American Red Cross will be sponsoring a blood drive on the concourse; fans can pre-register by visiting givelife.org.
