
'Blades drop 3-2 decision to Texas

ESTERO, FL - The Florida Everblades (14-9-2) dropped a tough 3-2 game to the Texas Wildcatters (20-2-4) on Saturday night at Germain Arena in front of a crowd of 6,691. The win was the sixth straight for the Wildcatters and dropped the Everblades to 1-2-2 vs. Texas this season.
In a physical game, the Wildcatters jumped out of the gate scoring the game's first goal just 1:16 into the contest. Kevin Baker tallied his second goal of the season off a quick one-timer from the right circle. The Everblades however battled back to even the score at one midway through the period.
With the Everblades on the power play Ryan Van Buskirk unleashed a slap shot from the left point that found its way past Texas net-minder Peter Aubry and into the net at 10:41 setting off a shower of stuffed toys for the Everblades annual "Teddy Bear Toss." Van Buskirk's second goal of the season came on assists by Ernie Hartlieb and J.B. Bittner.
The game entered the second period tied at one and early in the period, the complexion of the game shifted when Brandon Benedict tallied a short-handed goal for the Wildcatters just 3:15 into the frame, giving Texas a 2-1 lead. The Wildcatters extended their lead to two goals at 15:37 of the period when former Everblade John McNabb converted on a 5-on-3 power play goal from the slot by lifting a shot over a sprawling Everblades goaltender Tyler Plante.
Late in the second period, the Everblades again took advantage of a power play to trim the Texas lead to one. With less than a minute to go in the period, Mathieu Melanson fed a pass from the right circle to the front of the Texas goal, and watched as it deflected off Brad Herauf and into the net with 26 seconds remaining in the period.
Things heated up in the third period with the physical play continuing, but despite some strong pressure by the in the closing moments could not even the score.
In goal, Plante saw his record fall to 4-5-1 after allowing the three goals on 42 shots, and Aubry improved to 11-2-1 by turning away 23 of 25 Everblades shots.
On the power play, the Everblades closed out night 2-for-6, while the Wildcatters finished 1-for-7.
