Charlotte Knights News Release
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - Despite a late-inning rally, the Charlotte Knights dropped the opening game of a six-game series against the Norfolk Tides by a score of 9-5 on Tuesday night from Truist Field in Uptown Charlotte. The Knights brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning with two outs, but fell just short in the end. Left fielder Jake Marisnick struck out with the bases loaded to end the game.
Tuesday's loss snapped Charlotte's two-game winning streak.
The Knights jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning thanks to Nate Mondou, who connected on his first home run of the season with Charlotte. For Mondou, the home run extended his hit-streak to nine consecutive games. He finished the night 1-for-4 with the home run.
One inning later, the Tides battled back to tie the game in the top of the second inning thanks to a Lewin Diaz sacrifice-fly RBI. In the top of the third, the Tides took a commanding 5-1 lead with a four-run inning. The inning was highlighted by a grand slam off the bat of Jordan Westburg.
RHP A.J. Alexy (0-3, 15.30) started Tuesday's game for the Knights and was charged with the loss after he allowed five runs on two hits over three innings pitched. Charlotte reliever J.B. Olson allowed four runs on five hits over three innings.
Charlotte put up two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to make it a 9-4 game and later rallied in the ninth inning to make it a 9-5 game. In the eighth, Marisnick doubled home one run and later scored on a wild pitch. Marisnick finished the night 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. In the ninth, Carlos Pérez singled home the team's fifth and final run of the game. He also had a three-hit game.
The Knights will continue the six-game homestand on Wednesday morning at Truist Field against the Norfolk Tides (Triple-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles). The "Voice of the Knights" Matt Swierad and long-time Knights broadcaster Mike Pacheco will have the call for all of the action on 730 The Game ESPN Charlotte and www.CharlotteKnights.com. First pitch is set for 11:05 a.m. from the Queen City on Wednesday.
