Kings Activate Pirnes; Assign Him To Manchester

MANCHESTER, NH - The Los Angeles Kings, the NHL affiliate of the Manchester Monarchs, today activated center Esa Pirnes (PEER-nes) from the injured reserve and assigned him to the Monarchs. The Monarchs also today assigned left wing Brad Church and right wing Leon Hayward to their ECHL affiliate, the Reading Royals. Pirnes, 27, has appeared in 18 games for the Kings this season, recording two assists (0-2=2) and two penalty minutes. The 6-foot, 190-pound native of Oulu, Finland, was placed on the injured reserve after suffering a concussion on November 27 versus the Phoenix Coyotes. Originally selected by the Kings in the sixth-round (174th overall) in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Pirnes made his NHL debut during the Kings season opener on October 9 at the Detroit Red Wings.

Church, 27, has appeared in 11 games for the Monarchs this season, recording 11 points (5-6=11) and zero penalty minutes. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound native of Dauphin, Manitoba, who serves as captain for the Royals, recorded 20 points (10-10=20) in 20 games in Reading before being recalled by the Monarchs on December 9. Originally selected by the Washington Capitals in the first-round (17th overall) in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft, Church signed a one-year contract with the Monarchs in August of 2003.

Hayward, 24, has appeared in 16 games for the Monarchs this season, recording three points (1-2=3) and 11 penalty minutes. The 5-foot-11, 200-pound native of Seattle, Washington, has also appeared in 12 games for the Royals this season, recording eight points (6-2=8) and 12 penalty minutes. Hayward agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Monarchs in August of 2003.

The Monarchs end a four-game home stand on Wednesday, January 7 when they host the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday marks the first-ever meeting between the teams.
