Hershey Bears News Release
Last Week: The BEARS started the week with a 2-2 tie on Tuesday in Providence against the Bruins. Tomas Slovak scored the game-tying goal late in the second period to earn HERSHEY a point in Rhode Island. Eric Perrin notched his team leading 13th goal against the Bruins. Friday night found the BEARS in Hartford, and HERSHEY scored the first four goals of the game to win 4-2 over the first place Wolfpack at the Hartford Civic Center. The BEARS tied a season high in the game by scoring three power play goals. Peter Budaj made a career high 52 saves to preserve the victory. On Saturday the BEARS and the Portland Pirates skated to a rare 0-0 tie at the Cumberland County Civic Center. Tom Lawson earned his second shutout of the season without earning a victory for his efforts. HERSHEY wrapped up a four game week Sunday with a 3-1 loss against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at the Arena at Harbor Yard. D.J Smith scored the only goal of the game for the BEARS.
Notables: The goal for D.J. Smith on Sunday tied a career high for the veteran defenseman. Smith scored seven goals two other times in his career. Smith also has goals in four of his last six games. The 0-0 tie on Saturday night was the first time the BEARS have been involved in a scoreless game since February 5, 1972. Andre Gill of HERSHEY and Rocky Farr of the Cincinnati Swords battled to a scoreless draw that night at HERSHEYPARK Arena. Brad Larsen was recalled to the Colorado Avalanche before Sunday's game at Bridgeport. Larsen had a five-game point streak snapped Saturday night in Portland. HERSHEY announced Sunday that left wing Jean-Francois Soucy was recalled from Pensacola (ECHL) to replace Larsen. Rookie defenseman Tomas Slovak earned points in four straight games from December 28th to January 2nd. The streak represents the longest of his professional career. The BEARS are officially at the halfway mark of the 2003-04 season after Sunday's game at Bridgeport. HERSHEY is on pace for an 88 point season after Sunday's loss against the Sound Tigers. Defenseman Pascal Trepanier missed Saturday and Sunday's games to be with his wife Kalin for the birth of their second child. Maxime Trepanier, the couple's second son, was born Saturday at 10:00 a.m. The newest addition to the Trepanier family weighs in at 6 pounds, 14 ounces.
Colorado Update: Phil Sauve won his fourth game of the season as the Avalanche downed the Minnesota Wild on Sunday night 3-1. Milan Hejduk scored the game-winning goal Sunday as Colorado won for the third straight time. Sauve made 25 saves to earn the win over the Wild at Pepsi Center. The Avalanche now have a busy four game week coming up beginning with a game Tuesday at home against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Tony Granato's club then embarks on a three game road trip starting Thursday night in Nashville against the Predators. The Avs will also play at Dallas this Saturday afternoon against the Stars at 1:00 p.m. before playing in Chicago Sunday night against the Blackhawks. Colorado is in second place in the Northwest Division, trailing Vancouver by four points. The Avalanche also are four points in front of Calgary for third place in a tight division race.
Tampa Bay Update: The Lightning are four points behind division leader Atlanta as the week begins, but the Bolts still have four games in hand on Bob Hartley's Thrashers. Tampa broke out of an offensive slump in a big way against the Flyers, routing Philadelphia 6-1 at the St. Pete Times Forum. Fredrik Modin notched three goals Saturday against Philly to lead the Lightning to the victory. Tampa Bay begins a five game road trip tomorrow with a game in Ottawa against the Senators. The Bolts will travel to Montreal Thursday for a game at the Bell Centre against the Canadiens before playing in New Jersey Friday against the Devils. John Tortorella's team will also be in New York Sunday to face the Rangers. Upcoming promotions: Huggins Printing Team Photo night comes up on Saturday, January 10 when the BEARS host the Albany River Rats at 7:00 p.m. A free 2003-04 team photo will be given to the first 5,000 fans through the gates.
