January 5, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Providence Bruins News Release
The Providence Bruins begin the week in second place in the Atlantic Division with their 17-12-8-0 record (42 points), three points behind the division-leading Hartford Wolf Pack. The Bruins have been aided by a power play unit that has produced a league-high 31 goals, and has clicked at a 17.4% success rate, tying them for third in the AHL. The Black and Gold continues to remain near the top of the division standings despite staggering numbers of players being out of the lineup. Through 37 games, head coach Scott Gordon's club has lost 241 man-games due to injuries, call-ups and suspensions.
Providence right wing Carl Corazzini has had one of the AHL's hottest hands lately, tallying 6-1-7 totals in his last six games, including a team season-high four-game goal streak. Over the last six games, he has scored three shorthanded goals, two power play goals and two game-winning goals. The 24-year-old native of Framingham, Massachusetts leads the AHL with four shorthanded goals, and leads the Bruins with 12 goals overall. He is also tied for third on the team with 18 points. His goal-scoring streak ties him for the longest current streak in the league, one off the longest in the AHL this season.
Bruin rookie goaltender Hannu Toivonen led Finland to the Bronze Medal at the World Junior Championships in Helsinki on Monday, as he stopped 16 shots in a 2-1 win over the Czech Repbulic. The 19-year-old native of Kalvola, Finland was 4-2-0 in six games, with a 1.85 GAA and .920 save percentage. He is 8-5-2 in 16 games with the P-Bruins, with a 2.22 GAA and .924 save percentage, along with one shutout. Toivonen, the Boston Bruins' first pick, 29th overall, in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, is expected to return to Providence later this week.
The Providence Bruins are proud to host their second "Tip-A-Bruin" night of the season, at Dave & Buster's in the Providence Place Mall on Wednesday, January 7 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Bruins players will be on hand to help out the waitstaff, sell raffle tickets for autographed souvenirs and sell discounted tickets to upcoming P-Bruins home games. All proceeds will be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Rhode Island. The Bruins players attending will be Carl Corazzini, Mike Gellard, Colton Orr and Martin Samuelsson.
