Kernels Sweep Doubleheader Thursday with Pair of Last At-Bat Wins

Cedar Rapids, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels flipped the script on the Chiefs Thursday, walking off with a pair of extra inning victories, beating Peoria 3-2 and 4-3. Both games were scheduled for seven innings, but each contest ventured into the eighth before it was decided in the extra frame.
GAME ONE:
Peoria right-hander Michael McGreevy posted his second consecutive quality start in game one of Thursday's twinbill. However, a lack of run support kept the door open for Cedar Rapids, who took the opener 3-2 in eight innings.
The Kernels got to McGreevy in the first with consecutive two-out hits. Not only did McGreevy allow his first run of the season, it was also the first time he allowed a baserunner past first base.
From there, McGreevy settled in and posted five straight zeroes. Through three starts, he now owns a sparkling 0.51 ERA.
Peoria scored in the top of the third to knot the game at 1-1, thanks to a single by Mack Chambers. Neither team would score again until the eighth inning.
In the top of the eighth, it was again Chambers who delivered. His sac fly plated Noah Mendlinger, the assigned ghost runner, to make it 2-1.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Kernels did not go quietly. All told, they recorded three consecutive fielder's choices to tie the game at 2-2. Then, with the winning run at third, a Jefferson Morales sac fly ended the contest and moved the Kernels to a league-best 9-2 record.
GAME TWO:
Peoria starter Gordon Graceffo followed the leader in the nightcap of Thursday's doubleheader, by whiffing a career-high eight batters over five shutout innings. A late rally, however, again doomed the Chiefs as the Kernels walked off with a 4-3 win in game two.
The back half of the doubleheader was scoreless into the fifth, when Jacob Buchberger singled home Mike Antico to give Peoria a 1-0 advantage. Later in the inning, newly-entered pitcher Derek Molina uncorked a wild pitch to make it 2-0 Chiefs.
Peoria reliever John Beller allowed a run in the sixth on an RBI groundout, but worked out of a jam to keep Peoria in front by a run. In the seventh, Ryan Loutos, who was looking for his second save of the year, gave up a two-out single to Willie Joe Garry to send the second straight game to extras.
In the eighth, Peoria again scratched a run. It was Buchberger who again delivered, this time with a single to center, to push Peoria ahead 3-2. Lotus returned to the mound in the bottom of the eighth, but a single and fielder's choice promptly knotted the game 3-3. With a runner on first, Jair Camargo doubled off the wall in right field, which allowed Jefferson Morales to motor all the way from first.
Following the sweep, the Chiefs have lost three straight for the first time this season. The teams are scheduled to meet again Friday at 6:35. Dionys Rodriguez is the probable starter for Peoria.
