Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
KALAMAZOO, Michigan - The Kalamazoo Wings used three first period goals to set sail to a 7-1 win over the Cincinnati Cyclones on Friday night. The seven goals allowed by the Cyclones are the most the club has surrendered in a game this season. Mike McLean scored the lone marker for Cincinnati.
The Cyclones six game winning streak over the Kalamazoo Wings came to an end. The defeat marked just the second time this season that Cincinnati has lost back-to-back games in regulation time.
Kalamazoo raced out to a 3-0 first period lead and never looked back. Matt Jones opened the scoring 1:01 into the period with his 16th goal of the season, as Derek Strong in his ECHL debut had the assist. The Wings extended the lead when Trent Daavettila picked up his tenth score of the campaign at 2:37 with Andrew Fournier and Devin Featherstone getting the helpers. Former Cyclone Jon Landry buried his fourth lamplighter on the power play at 13:56 to round out the scoring. Daavettila and Ryan McGinnis dished out the assists. The shots favored Cincinnati, 11-9, in the period.
The Wings tacked on a pair of goals in the second period to make the lead 5-0. Jones picked up his second of the night and 17th of the campaign at 10:28 from Strong and Mitch Versteeg. Will Colbert's third goal at 17:45 from Tyler Willis and former Cyclone Sam Ftorek chased Cincinnati goaltender Robert Mayer. Mayer, who was 5-0 on the season against Kalamazoo-stopped ten of 15 shots before yielding to All-Star goaltender Jeremy Smith. The Wings outshot the Cyclones, 6-3, in the frame.
The Cyclones ended the shutout bid at 7:40 on the power play when Mike McLean picked up his tenth of the season from Scott Reynolds and Jimmy Kilpatrick. A pair of late goals from Kalamazoo's Andrew Fournier and Darryl Lloyd closed out the scoring in the 7-1 defeat. The shots favored Kalamazoo, 14-7, in the period and 29-21 for the game. The Wings were one for three with the man-advantage while Cincinnati was one for four with the power play.
Ryan Nie picked up the win for Kalamazoo, stopping 20 of the 21 shots he faced from his former team. Robert Mayer took the loss, stopping ten of the 15 shots he faced before Smith turned away twelve of the 14 shots he faced.
Toledo continues to lead the North Division with 50 points, while Cincinnati and Toledo each have 49 points and Wheeling has 45 points. It is the tightest divisional race in the ECHL this season.
