Boise, ID - The Las Vegas Wranglers® (17-18-4, 38 Points) defeated the Idaho Steelheads (25-11-2, 52 Points) 6-5 Friday night at the Qwest Arena. Wranglers forward Alex Bourret led the Wranglers with a hat-trick and two assists, his five points ties a Las Vegas franchise record that has been matched five previous times. Las Vegas winger Ned Lukacevic added a goal and three assists as the Wranglers snapped a four-game winless streak. Forwards Adam Miller and Shay Stephenson also scored for Las Vegas. Goalie Michael Ouzas stopped 43 shots to improve to 14-14-3 this season. Forward Matt McKnight led the way for Idaho with two goals. Forwards Evan Barlow, John Swanson, and Brankdon Kushniruk also scored for the Steelheads in the loss. Idaho goalie Rejean Beauchemin was handed the loss to fall to 13-7-2 on the season. The Wranglers will take on the Steelheads in Idaho Saturday, January 23rd, at 6:10 p.m. at Qwest Arena.
The Wranglers opened the scoring with two goals in the first five minutes of play. Forward Shay Stephenson tallied his fourth goal on the season at 3:16 to give Las Vegas a 1-0 lead. At 4:59, winger Alex Bourret padded the lead with his first goal on the season. Defenseman Jason Krischuk and center Adam Miller set up Bourret for the 2-0 Las Vegas lead. At 11:39, Bourret struck again for his second goal of the game to stretch the Wranglers lead to 3-0. Miller joined in on the scoring, tallying his 11th goal of the season at 13:29 to increase the lead to 4-0. Before the end of the first, forward Evan Barlow notched a five-on-three power-play goal to chip into the Wranglers lead.
In the second period, Idaho trimmed the Las Vegas lead at 9:13 with a power-play goal from forward Matt McKnight. McKnight's ninth goal on the season trimmed the score to 4-2 Las Vegas. At 13:45, Steelheads forward John Swanson made it a one-goal game with his 12th goal of the season.
The Wranglers regained a two-goal lead with a tally from left wing Ned Lukacevic at 6:58 of the third period. Lukacevic's team leading 16th goal of the season padded the Las Vegas lead to 5-3. At 12:37, Bourret tallied his hat-trick goal for the Wranglers to extend the lead to 6-3. The Steelheads answered back just over a minute later with McKnight's second tally of the night, to cut the Las Vegas lead to 6-4. Just 18-seconds later, Idaho made it a one-goal game again with Brandon Kushniruk's sixth goal of the season. Wranglers goalie Michael Ouzas stopped 43 of 48 shots to hold off Idaho's late surge for the 6-5 Las Vegas win.
