Kalamazoo Wings News Release
Game Rewind
Monday, February 14th Vs Wheeling (Kalamazoo 3-Wheeling 2)
Kalamazoo, MI- The Kalamazoo Wings showed no signs of fatigue of playing five games in six days with a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Wheeling Nailers during the 11th Annual Pink Ice Game, presented by WWMT and WKFR.
Having the makings of playoff hockey, the first period featured plenty of hits and end-to-end action, but no scoring. Each team fired nine shots on net and neither team was whistled for any penalties.
While there was no love loss during the game, there was some love as Brenda Phillips and William Godfrey were married during the first period intermission.
Coming out flying in the second period, Kalamazoo grabbed the lead 47 seconds into the period, with Andrew Fournier's 27th goal of the season. Fournier, who leads the team in goals, has lit the lamp three times in the past two games.
Extending their lead three minutes later, the K-Wings took a 2-0 lead as Patrick Asselin found the streaking Mitch Versteeg (3rd) down the right side. Karlander who had the second assist on Versteeg's third goal of the season, extended his home point streak to four games.
Late in the period the K-Wings found themselves down two men and Wheeling capitalized. Breaking Ryan Nie's 159:13 minute shut-out streak on pink ice, Kyle Bushee (4th) took a tape-to-tape pass from Jason DeSantis and rocketed a slap shot past Nie through the five hole.
It only took 31 more seconds for Wheeling to tie the game on shot by Mike Gershon that was deflected by the screening Kelly Miller (6th).
In the third period it was the K-Wings turn with a 5-on-3 power-play and the league's top man-advantage unit wouldn't falter, as A.J. Thelen sent a cross-rink pass to Sam Ftorek (8th), who snipped a slap shot under the blocker of Peter Delmas for the eventual game-winner.
The victory extended the K-Wings winning streak to a season-high four games, while lengthening their pink ice winning streak to eight games. Kalamazoo is now 8-3-0-0 on pink ice.
Saturday, February 19th @ Toledo (Kalamazoo 1-Toledo 2-Shootout)
Toledo, OH- Starting a stretch of seven games in nine nights, the Kalamazoo Wings entered the third period with the lead, but it was the Toledo Walleye that fought back to leave the Huntington Center with the 2-1 shootout victory.
A quick tempo in the opening period seemed to favor the K-Wings. Kalamazoo outshot Toledo 13-9 and earned the lone goal in the frame. Darryl Lloyd (9th) put the K-Wings ahead 1-0 7:29 into the period with a rebound marker. After Andrew Fournier's slap shot was stopped by Jimmy Spratt, Lloyd extended his point streak to five games by sending in wrister past the outstretch goaltender.
While Kalamazoo controlled the first period, Toledo countered in the second period, outshooting the K-Wings 21-5 in the period, earning a majority of those chances on three power-play opportunities.
Despite the lopsided shot totals, the K-Wings kept their lead in the period through dominate goaltending from Ryan Nie, who stopped 25 of his game-high 42 saves in the second period.
Toledo finally figured out a way to beat Nie in the third period, as Mike Hedden (18th) scored the equalizer on a backhander midway into the period.
Hedden's goal would be the last of regulation and with neither team scoring in overtime; the game would be decided in a shootout. The Walleye outscored the K-Wings 2-1 in the extra session to escape with the one goal victory.
Despite the shootout loss, Kalamazoo still leads the State Line Face-Off Series, Presented by AmeriGas, America's Propane Company with a record of 5-2-1-1.
Sunday, February 20th Vs Toledo (Kalamazoo 5-Toledo 2)
Kalamazoo, MI- While the night before was a defensive struggle, Sunday was a struggle for the defense, at least in the first period, as the Kalamazoo Wings defeated the Toledo Walleye 5-2 on Superhero's Night, presented by Charter Communications.
Starting the scoring 3:33 into the contest, Aaron Clarke registered his 13th goal of the season. Taking a tape-to-tape pass from Justin Taylor, Clarke found himself all alone on the right side of the net and ripped a snap shot past the blocker of Joe Palmer.
Wasting no time, Toledo's Christopher DiDomenico needed just 21 seconds to even the game at 1-1 pocketing his 5th tally of the season on a backhander.
Two minutes later, the K-Wings regained the lead with an even strength goal by Patrick Asselin, his 17th of the season. Asselin took the puck across the crease and buried it over the glove of the stretched out Palmer.
The K-Wings were not done as Andrew Fournier extended his point streak to five games by notching his team-leading 28th goal of the campaign. Assisting on the goal were Trent Daavettila and Mike Sellitto, who earned his first point as a member of the K-Wings.
Striking 58 seconds later, Kalamazoo increased their lead to three goals with Clarke's (14th) second goal of the night that was generated off an initial shot from Dean Strong. The assist from Strong was his second of the night.
After no scoring in the second period, the Walleye cut into the K-Wings lead with a power-play tally from Sebastien Piche (5th). Piche, who leads the team in power-play goals has scored all his this season on the man-advantage.
Closing out the scoring later in the period while on the power-play, Sam Ftorek found Trent Daavettila on the backdoor for Daavettila's 20th goal of the season.
With the victory, the K-Wings lead the State Line Face-Off Series, presented by AmeriGas, America's Propane Company, with a record of 6-2-1-1.
