Atlanta Gladiators News Release
Playoff Race: The Gwinnett Gladiators (22-24-7) dropped two games in Florida last Friday and Saturday, 5-2 and 7-3. Gwinnett now finds themselves in the 10th spot in the Eastern Conference, but with only one point separating them from the eighth seed Toledo Walleye as of Monday. With four games this week the Glads will have ample opportunity to make up that ground.
On the Road Again: All four games this week are on the road, as the Glads play a makeup game from 12/14 on Tuesday in Greenville (the game was postponed originally due to poor ice conditions.) The Glads then head North to face Trenton twice and the top team in the East, the Reading Royals over the weekend.
All's Well for Brookwell: Glads defenseman Cody Brookwell had an assist on Friday and a goal (2) and an assist on Saturday, making this the first time this season he has picked up at least a point in back-to-back games. He has his only two goals of the season and two helpers over his last four games.
Cam's the Man: Rookie forward Dustin Cameron is starting to hit his stride since coming to Gwinnett in a trade from Elmira. Cameron has a point in seven of his last eight games after picking up a goal and an assist in Florida over the weekend. While he had just three goals and four assists in 24 games with the Jackals, Cameron now has two goals and four assists in only nine games as a Gladiator.
Forney on Fire: The Glads All-Star representative, forward Michael Forney, has also been carrying the load offensively for a while now. He had a five-game point streak and a ten-game road point streak snapped on Saturday in Florida, and has at least a point in 19 of the Glads last 21 games (9 g, 20 a). He's also tied for 3rd in the league with 38 assists, and 9th with 52 points on the season.
Akim the Dream: 21-year old Nigerian native Akim Aliu (ah-lee-OO) had a couple assists over the weekend in Florida to extent his point streak to five games. The forward has at least a point in eight of his nine games with the Glads (8 g, 5 a) with three multi-point performances.
Pat's All That: Forward Pat Galivan has been on a tear since the start of the new year. He has at least a point in 11 of his last 16 games, with six goals and 16 assists over that stretch.
Potent Power Play: The Gladiators are 18-for their last-68 (26%) on the powerplay over their last 15 games. This past weekend however they were shutout on the man advantage (combined 0-for-6) in two games by the Blades.
Streak Snapper: Forward Danick Paquette now has three goals in his last three games after snapping a 20-game scoreless drought on 2/13 against South Carolina. He's also 6th in the league with 145 penalty minutes.
Second, Third Time's the Charm: In three game sets this season Gwinnett has improved the more they have seen an opponent. In the first game the Gladiators are just 2-3-3, but they are 6-1-0 in the second and third games (12-2-0 combined).
A Full 60 Minutes:The score after the first two periods has been crucial for the Gladiators this season. Gwinnett is a perfect 16-0-0 this season when leading after two periods of play but the Gladiators are 2-20-6 when trailing after two periods of play this season.
Last Week:
February 19th, Florida 7, Gwinnett 3 - L Germain Arena, Estero, FL
The Gwinnett Gladiators gave up four goals in the third period and could not hang on in a 7-3 loss to the Florida Everblades on Saturday night at the Germain Arena. Gwinnett falls to 22-24-2-5 on the season in the loss while the Everblades improve to 30-24-0-3 on the season. Gwinnett jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Dustin Cameron's 5th goal of the season, which gives him points in six of his past seven games with the Gladiators. Cameron found a loose puck along the goal line and flipped it past Everblades netminder Jaroslav Janus for the tally. Andy Brandt collected a helper on the goal for Gwinnett at 13:08 of the first period.
February 18th, Florida 5, Gwinnett 2 - L Germain Arena, Estero, FL
The Florida Everblades scored the final four goals of the game and beat the Gwinnett Gladiators 5-2 on Friday night at the Germain Arena. Ed Pasquale (4-3-0) made 30 saves in the losing effort as the Gladiators drop to 22-23-2-5 on the season with the loss. Andy Brandt and Michael Forney scored for the Glads, as Forney extended his road point streak to ten games.
