This Week's Recap and Results

Monday, Feb 14: Wheeling - 2 at Kalamazoo ‚¬" 3

The Nailers Valtentines's Day date with division rival Kalamazoo turned out to be a bad one. Sam Ftorek's 5-on-3 power play goal with less than fve mintues remaining would lift the Wings to to the 3-2 victory on the pink ice surface. Wheeling received both of its goals on the power play, as Kelly Miller and hometown kid Kyle Bushee scored in the second period.

Friday, Feb. 18: Wheeling ‚¬" 0 vs. Reading -- 1 (Shootout)

It was a goaltender's duel at the Cambria County War Memorial in Johnstown Friday night. Reading's Matt Dalton stopped all 48 shots faced in the game, while Wheeling's Patrick Killeen made 33 saves. After 65 minutes of scoreless hockey, the game was decided by Andrew Sarauer shootout goal to give Reading the 1-0 win. It was the first time in Royals history that a game finished 1-0 via the shootout. Both Dalton and Killeen earned their third shutouts of the season.

Saturday, Feb, 19: Wheeling ‚¬" 1 at Reading - 3

After 65 minutes of scoreless hockey the night before, it took just 14 minutes for one of the teams to break the scoring drought. Reading's Todd Perry picked up a turnover in the zone and fired a slapshot past Patrick Killeen to give Reading the 1-0 lead. The Nailers Alex Grant tied the game on a backhand shot from the circle, scoring his first goal the season. However, just like they have all season, the Royals find ways to win the close games. Chris Blight scored the go-ahead goal with 4:34 remaining, then later added an empty net goal to secure the 3-1 home victory.

Sunday, Feb. 20: Wheeling ‚¬" 2 at Trenton ‚¬" 4

The game started with great tempo, as both teams created some quality scoring chances early. The Nailers Kelly Miller stuck first scoring a goal on a wirst shot from the circle. Trenton tied the game on Miles Stoesz's first tally of the year early in the second period. Wheeling took the lead back on a 5-on-3 power play, as Jason DeSantis ripped a slapshot from the point. Nearly two minutes later, the Devils tied the game on a 5-on-3 goal of their own from Ryan Hayes. Trenton outshot a fatigued Nailers squad 13-3 in the final period, and received the go-ahead goal from Dan Charleston, and an empty goal by Jeremy Akeson.

This Week's Quick Hits

"Special Teams" The Nailers power play is ranked second best in the league, while the penalty kill is ranked third overall in the ECHL....The Nailers concluded their season series with Trenton on Sunday, taking nine of the 11 meetings.
