Norfolk Tides News Release
Second baseman Jahmai Jones extended his on-base streak to 24 games and relievers Evan Phillips and Cody Carroll combined to toss four scoreless frames, but the Tides (23-29) fell by an 11-0 final score to the Durham Bulls on Tuesday night at Harbor Park.
Tides starter Dean Kremer (1.2IP, 5H, 7R/4ER, 2BB, 2K) took the loss in his first home start of the year. The Bulls scored in each of their first three times at bat, highlighted by a six-run second inning in which they batted around their lineup. Eight of Durham's nine hitters recorded hits on the evening.
Durham reliever and Virginia Beach native Sean Poppen earned the win after striking out five Tides hitters over three scoreless innings. Poppen, a graduate of Cape Henry Collegiate and Harvard University, allowed one hit and lowered his season ERA to 1.99 (22.2IP, 5ER).
Center fielder Zach Jarrett contributed the highlight play of the night for Norfolk in the top of the seventh, sprinting back to the wall and robbing Bulls first baseman Dalton Kelly with a leaping grab.
Phillips and Carroll each threw two scoreless innings, while fellow reliever Marcos Diplán added another in the top of the ninth. Diplán will represent the Tides in both the upcoming MLB Futures Game in Denver and in the Tokyo Olympics, where he will pitch for his native Dominican Republic.
With a walk in the third inning, Jones reached base for the 24th consecutive game. Over that span, he has hit .310 (26-for-84) with seven extra-base hits and more walks (22) than strikeouts (21).
Norfolk and Durham (37-17) will square off again on Wednesday night, with right-handed knuckleballer Mickey Jannis expected to start for the Tides. The Bulls will counter with lefty Dietrich Enns. First pitch at Harbor Park is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
