South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, SC - Josh Johnson made 34 saves en route to his second shut out of the season, and Travis Morin provided the only goal of the night, as the South Carolina Stingrays defeated the Augusta Lynx 1-0 at the North Charleston Coliseum.
"Defensively it was night and day," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "We didn't give up too many opportunities and when we did, [Josh] Johnson was there to make the save."
After getting pulled in yesterday's game against Columbia, Bednar started Johnson in net tonight. Through the first period of play, there were very few chances for either team, and neither team could find the back of the net.
The second period featured much of the same, but when the Stingrays went on the power play they found Morin for his team leading 29th goal of the year. The goal came just after the half way point, at 10:13, from Chris Chaput and Cail MacLean.
The third period was once again dominated by solid defense on both sides of the ice. It wasn't until the final minute when Augusta pulled goaltender Bobby Goepfert in favor of the extra attacker, that they had any real pressure on Johnson. But Johnson remained stout in net, and held on for the shut out victory, his second of the year, and the fourth for the Rays.
Johnson was the winning goaltender as he turned aside all 34 shots that came his way. The losing goaltender was Goepfert who stopped 21 of the 22 shots he faced. The Rays went 1-4 on the power play, while killing off all seven short handed situations they faced.
South Carolina is back in action on Tuesday night when they play host to the Dayton Bombers of the Northern Division. Game time will be at 7:05.
