Elmira Jackals News Release
ELMIRA, NY - Ryan Garlock scored twice and Randy Rowe picked up a goal and an assist to lead the Johnstown Chiefs to a 6-2 rout of the Elmira Jackals Sunday in front of 3,254 fans at First Arena. The loss was Elmira's sixth in a row (0-3-1-2), a season-high.
Rowe's strike came off of a deflection of an Alexandre Imbeault right wing drive thirteen minutes into the middle period and proved to be the game-winner. It came just sixty-four seconds after Garlock tied the game at 2-2 with a five-on-three power play goal.
That 1:04 span was enough to tilt the contest in favor of the visitors, who ran their winning streak to four games, and dug out of a 2-1 deficit at the end of one period to do it.
Benoit Doucet struck just five seconds into the game's first power play after Tyler Hirsch was sent of for slashing. Tomas Kudelka, reassigned from Binghamton (AHL) prior to the game, sent a low bullet off the pads of Chiefs goaltender Ryan Nie (25 saves). Standing to the left of the net, Doucet sent in his 22nd of the year for a 1-0 advantage at 6:04.
Johnstown tied the contest as Mike Knight spotted Jason Spence cutting to the Jackals' line and hit him breaking on the left wing. From the circle and with the defense closing, Spence sent a backhander over the glove hand to know the game at 1-1 at 9:56 of the first period.
Another power play chance afforded the Jackals the opportunity to grab their final lead of the night late in the first period as Andrew Martens was whistled for hooking.
Pierre-Luc Faubert circled a puck from behind the net to Bruce Watson in the deep slot. Watson had his shot was stopped by Nie, but Doucet pounced on the loose change and slipped in his team-leading 23rd of the year at 18:54 for the 2-1 lead.
After the quick strikes in the second period, the Chiefs delivered the knockout punch with a four-on-four goal just eighteen seconds into the final period from Garlock before Tyler Hirsch and Kenny Roche (shorthanded) closed out the scoring for Johnstown.
Elmira is next in action Friday night as they hit the road to battle the resurgent Trenton Devils in a 7:30 face-off at Sovereign Bank Arena. Broadcast coverage on MAGIC-FM (92.7/97.7) and on-line at www.jackalshockey.com begins at 7:00 p.m. with the Hill Top Inn Countdown to Face-Off. The Jackals then head to Johnstown for a rematch with the Chiefs Saturday at 7:05 p.m. (broadcast coverage 6:35 p.m.).
