Johnstown Chiefs News Release

Elmira, NY - The Johnstown Chiefs shrugged off two first-period power play goals against for the second consecutive night en route to a 6-2 win over the Elmira Jackals on Sunday.

Benoit Doucet proved tough for the Chiefs to contain in the first period as he scored two power play goal to put the Chiefs behind by one after 20 minutes.

Doucet got his first at 6:04 of the opening frame, but Jason Spence erased the lead with his fourth goal of the year at 9:56. Mike Knight hit Spence with a lead pass, and he was able to deflect it by Luke Fritshaw on the left wing before picking it up on the other side and beating Joel Martin with a backhand shot. Doucet re-upped Elmira's lead with his 23rd goal of the year, coming on the power play once again.

A teammate of Benoit Doucet in juniors with Victoriaville in 2006-07, Alex Imbeault refused to be outdone by his former teammate, and picked up two assists in the second to match Doucet's two goals in the first. Imbeault nearly scored with the Chiefs on the power play, but his shot was turned aside by Martin, however, Ryan Garlock was there to send the rebound home at 11:56. Mike Knight picked up his second assist on the night as well.

Then Randy Rowe deflected a shot by Imbeault past Martin at 13:00 of the second to give the Chiefs their first lead of the game with Brian Deeth picking up the secondary assist.

The game seemed to be headed for a tight finish with Johnstown holding the one-goal lead after two periods, but three-third period markers turned the game into a bit of a laugher.

Ryan Garlock picked up his second of the game just 18 seconds into the third with Randy Rowe setting him up just below the left wing faceoff circle. Tyler Hirsch got into the act with his 11th goal of the year at 3:06, finishing off a rush generated by Spence and Jean Desrochers. For Spence, the two points (1g, 1a) marked his first multi-point game of 2007-08. Kenny Roche closed out the scoring with a shorthanded breakaway goal with 13:43 left in regulation.

Ryan Nie made 25 saves in picking up his 22nd win of the season, and the Chiefs' power play ended up going 1-for-12.
