Wildcatters Power Through Gwinnett for Third Win in Three Days
March 2, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Texas Wildcatters News Release
Duluth, GA-- The Texas Wildcatters continue to find ways to win on the road, collecting their third win in as many days. Texas completed a two-game sweep of Gwinnett with a 3-1 win over the Gladiators on Sunday afternoon. The win moves Texas to 43-6-3-8 (95 points, 1st in South Division).
Both teams skated to a scoreless first period, but the physical play would set the tone for the remainder of the game. The 'Catters committed two early penalties, putting Gwinnett in a favorable position to take the lead; however, Troy Riddle and the Texas penalty kill caused mass confusion for the Gladiators' special teams.
Unlike the Gladiators, Texas would take advantage of the extra attacker as they scored on their first two power play opportunities.
At 6:58 in the second period, John Adams broke the tie by pushing the puck past Gladiators' goalie Dan Turple. Forwards Brandon Benedict and Kevin Baker both collected assists on the power-play goal. Less than 3 minutes later, Texas increased their lead by two as Max Taylor netted his third goal in three days. A.J. Thelen slung a wrist shot towards Turple, who made a beautiful kick save but failed to cover the puck. Taylor collected the rebound and slapped a shot past Turple's blocker. John McNabb and Thelen collected assists on the 'Catter's second power-play goal.
Texas Goalie Kris Tebbs collected his third win of the weekend as he stopped 27 of the Gladiators' 28 shots. Andy Brandt ended Tebbs' hopes of collecting a shutout as he fluttered a shot over Tebbs' left shoulder. Brandt's 14th goal of the season came at the 15:04 mark of the second period.
However, that goal would prove to be the only bright spot for the Gladiators. Matt Kassian added an insurance goal at 1:58 in the third period as he connected on a beautiful pass from Baker.
With Sunday's win, Texas finished the regular season without a regulation loss to Gwinnett (6-0-1).
The Wildcatters conclude their four game road trip at Augusta on Tuesday, March 4.
