Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV - Brad Mills single-handedly put the Nailers behind the eight ball early with a pair of goals in the opening four minutes of the first period, paving the way for a 5-1 Trenton Devils victory over the Wheeling Nailers Sunday evening at WesBanco Arena.
Mills danced his way to the slot and wristed one past goaltender Curtis Darling a mere 1:46 into the opening period with his team on the power play. Just over two minutes later the rookie struck again with his eighth of the year as he opted to shoot on a two-on-one with teammate Trevor Kell.
Those two goals would stand until Bill LeClerc expanded the Devils' lead at 13:42 of the second period. His shot from the point snuck through a maze of players in front of Darling and found its way into the back of the net for just his second goal of the season.
Trenton's Jim Henkel gave his team a 4-0 lead with only 10 seconds remaining in the second period on one of Eric Castonguay's three assists in the game.
The third period saw a fifth goal for the visitors before Wheeling got on the board. Tony Zancanaro slipped his tenth of the season past Darling at the 8:01 mark of the final frame.
For the second consecutive night, Aaron Clarke ended a shutout bid for the Trenton goalie late in the third period. He beat Maxime Ouellet with a shot at 13:43 for his tenth of the season, unassisted.
Ouellet made 31 saves in the win while Darling stopped 33 of the 38 shots that he faced. Both teams had four power-play opportunities with Trenton scoring the lone special teams' goal of the game.
Wheeling hits the road for a Friday night matchup with the Johnstown Chiefs at the Cambria County War Memorial. The puck will drop at 7:05pm followed by a 12:00pm start time in Trenton on Saturday. The Nailers return home on Sunday to face the Reading Royals at 6:05pm. Fans can bring their skates and hit the ice with the team after the game.
Don't forget the Nailers St. Patrick's Day celebration is coming up on March 14th and their limited edition jerseys will be auctioned off immediately following their game with the Cincinnati Cyclones. Call 304-234-GOAL for ticketing information or visit www.wheelingnailers.com.
