Joe Zappala Selected as CCM Vector ECHL Rookie of Month for December

Reading, PA - The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League and the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League, today announced that center Joe Zappala ("zah PAL uh") has been selected as the CCM Vector Rookie of the Month for December. Zappala, (6'0/205 lbs.) (23), scored nine goals, assisted on six others, and played to a +7 in fourteen games with the Royals during the month. Zappala, who led the nation in game winning goals in his sophomore season with the Yale University Bulldogs in 2003-04, racked up four game winners for the Royals in December. He currently leads the team-and is tied for second in the league-in that category. Zappala, who also picked up four fighting majors in December, bagged his first pro hattrick in a 7-4 win over the Trenton Titans on December 10-a game which was part of a career high seven game point streak (6g - 6a = 12pts) that he compiled from December 8 through 21. Zappala, who hails from Medford, Massachusetts, is currently ranked fifth in scoring on the Royals with twenty-three points (11g - 12a = 23 pts).

The Royals complete a four game road trip in Wheeling, West Virginia on Friday night (7:35 pm) before returning to the Sovereign Center for back-to-back games (Saturday, 7:05 pm; Sunday, 4:35 pm) against the Cincinnati Cyclones. Royals' game night broadcasts can be heard live on ESPN Radio 1240 am (and on the internet through the Royals' website, www.royalshockey.com), beginning thirty minutes before the opening face-off. Streaming video is also available for $6.00 per game through the B2 Networks, which can be accessed through the Royals' website.
