BUFFALO, NY - Jay Groome struck out five batters and held the Buffalo Bisons to three runs over five innings, but the Worcester Red Sox took a 7-2 loss on Wednesday night at Sahlen Field.

Groome, the 12th overall pick in the 2016 draft, racked up five strikeouts over his first two innings, but left trailing 3-1 after allowing a two-run homer to top prospect Gabriel Moreno in the first inning and a sacrifice fly to Otto Lopez in the fourth. Buffalo collected seven hits and drew two walks against Groome, who threw 95 pitches (60 strikes) in his third Triple-A start.

Worcester was held to two runs on six hits, scoring a run in the second inning on an RBI groundout by Nick Sogard and plating another in the ninth on a run-scoring base hit from Grant Williams.

James Norwood put together one of his best relief appearances since joining Worcester's bullpen, tossing two scoreless innings with three strikeouts, and facing the minimum after inducing a 6-4-3 double play off Moreno's bat in the seventh.

Buffalo broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the eighth, powered by a two-run double from Logan Warmoth and a two-run triple by Lopez.

The series continues in Buffalo on Thursday at 1:05 p.m. at Sahlen Field, with Brian Keller scheduled to start for Worcester. The team returns to Polar Park for a six-game series against the Durham Bulls (Tampa Bay Rays) starting on Tuesday. Tickets are available now at WooSox.com/tickets.
