ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Indians scored four runs thanks to a Jack Suwinski grand slam and never trailed, winning the series-opener at Toledo last night, 5-4. Following back-to-back walks and a single to put the first three batters of the game on base, Suwinski parked his first career grand slam over the right-field wall to put the Indians up early, 4-0. A home run by Kerry Carpenter in the second, RBI double by Brendon Davis in the fourth and RBI single by Daz Cameron in the bottom of the fifth brought Toledo back within one run, 4-3. In the top of the sixth, Martin then countered with his 15th home run of the season, marking the game-winning run as the Mud Hens plated one more with an RBI double off the bat of Josh Lester in the seventh.
A GRAND SALAMI WITH MONTEREY JACK: Jack Suwinski belted his third home run in four total hits with the Indians last night, a grand slam with no outs yet recorded in the game, to put the Indians up by four in the first inning last night. It was his first professional grand slam since being selected by San Diego in the 2016 First-Year Player Draft. The longball was his 20th of the season between Double-A Altoona (3), Indianapolis and Pittsburgh (14), with his 14 MLB home runs leading all National League rookies for the season.
THAT'S 100: With the Indians holding on to a one-run lead, Mason Martin snapped Toledo's momentum with a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning to extend the lead back to two runs. The longball marked the 100th of his professional career since being selected by Pittsburgh in the 17th round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft. In that time, his centennial dinger leads all Pirates farmhands. The slugger has launched 15 home runs this season and three this month. He has double-digit home runs in each of his five professional seasons, with a career-high 35 dingers in 2019 with Single-A Greensboro (23) and High-A Bradenton (12).
A GREAT VIEAUX: Cam Vieaux improved to 4-0 on the season last night with a scoreless sixth inning. Since April 26, the southpaw is 4-0 with a 1.61 ERA (5er/28.0ip), 0.68 WHIP and .120 average against (11-for-92) to lead a group of left-handers who have been dominant for the Indians as of late. Since 6/22, Vieaux, Cam Alldred, Eric Stout and Joe Jacques are a combined 4-1 with a 1.53 ERA. Add in Zach Matson, who has made five starts in his last nine appearances, and the collective ERA since 6/22 drops to 1.52 (8er/47.1ip) with a 1.08 WHIP, including Matson's starts. In comparison, 12 right-handed relievers (no starts included) are 3-5 with a 6.39 ERA (54er/76.0ip) in that time span.
ROANSY RETURNS: Roansy Contreras made his first start with Indianapolis since 5/19 (1) last night and tossed 2.0 one-run innings, with the only blemish on his line coming via a solo home run in the second inning. It was his first appearance across teams since tossing 6.0 one-run innings with seven strikeouts on 7/7 (1) with Pittsburgh at Cincinnati, after which he was optioned to Indianapolis. He has yet to record a Triple-A win but is 0-1 with a 2.82 ERA (7er/22.1ip) and 26 strikeouts in six starts with Indianapolis this season. In contrast, he is 3-2 with a 3.78 ERA (21er/50.0ip) and 50 strikeouts in 12 appearances (nine starts) with Pittsburgh.
TONIGHT: The Indians will look to build on an early lead in the six-game series against the Mud Hens today at 7:05 PM ET at Fifth Third Field. The two squads are meeting for the second time this season and the first time at Toledo. After entering this season trailing the all-time series record at Toledo, 115-112, the Indians could leave Fifth Third Field with a lead this week. The teams first met this season at Victory Field on May 17-22, and the Indians took the series victory with wins in four of the six contests. Tonight, Cody Bolton will take the mound for Indianapolis for his third outing against the Mud Hens this season. In two appearances (one start) against the International League West opponent, he is 1-0 with 12 strikeouts and just two hits allowed in 7.1 scoreless innings. Countering for Toledo is Matt Manning, who has a 6.52 ERA (7er/9.2ip) in three starts against Indy over the past two seasons.
BOLTON ON THE BUMP: Cody Bolton returns from the injured list to make his first appearance since 6/28 and first start since 6/18 tonight at Toledo. Bolton has been one of Indy's best starter/reliever combos this season, going 2-1 with a 2.89 ERA (15er/46.2ip) and 50 strikeouts in 16 games (nine starts). His reliever ERA of 2.55 (5er/17.2ip) is slightly better than his 3.10 mark (10er/29.0ip), but his strikeouts-per-9.0ip rate is consistent regardless of what role he appears in. As a reliever, however, his 1.58 strikeout-to-walk ratio is outshined by his 1.93 ratio as a starter. His longest outing of the season came on 6/2 at Omaha when he fanned seven batters over 5.0 one-run innings.
THIS DATE IN 2018: Casey Sadler improved to 6-5 on the season with a complete game in Game 2 of a doubleheader at Buffalo. He surrendered three runs to give Buffalo the lead, but the Indianapolis offense backed him with six runs in the final two innings combined for a comeback win. Six of the nine Indians batters drove in a run, while Christopher Bostick led the team with three hits. Austin Meadows was one three two-hit games for Indians players, both of his coming via the double.
