ST. PAUL, MN - The Iowa Cubs (43-51) dropped game two of the series against the St. Paul Saints (44-49) by a final score of 9-5 on Wednesday at CHS Field, taking their first loss since Friday in Omaha.

Each starting pitcher had a scoreless first inning, then the Saints kicked off the scoring in the second with a two-run home run from David Banuelos. The I-Cubs tied it back up in the next inning, using three singles, a walk, and an error to plate two runs and knot the game at two.

The Saints didn't let up, however. They retook the lead in the third inning without recording a hit, using a combination of three walks and an RBI fielder's choice to score instead. From there, they scored at least one run in each of the next four innings. Banuelos contributed in the fourth with his second home run of the day, Matt Wallner scored in the fifth, and then Jake Cave broke the game open with a three-run blast in the sixth inning.

While St. Paul saw success against each pitcher the I-Cubs sent out, the Saints' own staff were mainly successful through the middle innings. Starter Aaron Sanchez recovered after the two-run third and finished his outing with a scoreless fourth and fifth. Tyler Thornburg then took over in the sixth and pitched around a pair of singles to keep the score at 8-2.

Narciso Crook finally added on with a three-run home run in the seventh, bringing the score to 8-5, but the Saints added another run in their half of the inning, making it a 9-5 ballgame. From there, Ian Hamilton took over and pitched back-to-back one-two-three innings, striking out four of six to finish up the win for the Saints. Their 9-5 victory evened the series at one win apiece.

POSTGAME NOTES:

Luke Farrell was credited with the loss after becoming the first Iowa starter to allow a run since Cam Sanders on Friday.

David Banuelos is the fourth player to record a multi-home run game against the I-Cubs in 2022, with all four being St. Paul Saints. The previous three players all recorded theirs on June 5 in Des Moines.

Narciso Crook extended his hitting streak to a season-high seven games, which is just two games shy of his career high.

Brandon Leibrandt allowed three earned runs today, breaking a streak of 16.0 consecutive scoreless innings, which began on June 21.

Iowa will continue the series against St. Paul tomorrow night, playing the third of six games. First pitch between the I-Cubs and the Saints is set for 7:07pm. For more information and tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
