Rochester Red Wings News Release
Scranton-W/B RailRiders (46-48) vs. Rochester Red Wings (47-47)
Wednesday - 6:05 p.m. ET - Frontier Field - Rochester, NY
Radio: Fox Sports 1280/iHeartRadio | TV: MiLB.tv
LHP JP Sears (1-1, 1.83) vs. RHP Cade Cavalli (4-3, 4.31)
IT'S A HARD KNOCK LIFE: Rochester has now lost six straight as the Red Wings' lost 12-5 in the series-opener against Scranton last night...starter RHP Franklyn Kilome gave up four earned runs in three innings of work, an outing where he struck out 6 and walked a batter...OF Josh Palacios' third-inning single extended his on-base streak to 28 games and his hit-streak to 15 games, both rank as longest active streaks in IL...1B Joey Meneses hit a two-run homer in the following at-bat to make the score 4-2...LHP Carson Teel would give up six earned runs in the fourth, to make it 10-2...RHP Cade Cavalli will oppose Scranton's LHP JP Sears in tonight's contest.
HYPONOTIZE(D): With last night's loss, Rochester falls to .500 for the first time since April 24 when the club was 9-9 and have lost six-straight games, their second longest losing streak of the year (9 games, 6/7 - 6/15)...the Red Wings are now 12-28 over their last 40 contests after starting the season 35-19...the team's 18 hits surrendered last night are their most in a game this season (prev. high: 17, 6/11 at St Paul) and their 12 runs allowed are their second-most given up in a contest this season...with a loss today, the club would be below .500 for the first time since opening day.
NOTHIN' BUT A 'G 'P THANG: In last night's contest, where the Wings donned the Cocos Locos identity, OF Josh Palacios infield single in the third-inning extended his on-base streak to 28 games and his hit-streak to 15 games...both are currently the longest active streaks in the International League...since his on-base streak began on June 19, Palacios is batting a team-leading .358 (38-for-106)...the former Auburn Tiger is just one game away from tying Nolan Gorman's (MEM) 16-game hit-streak (04/08 - 04/30), the longest in the IL this season...it would also be the longest-hit streak by a Wing since Nick Gordon had a 16 game hit-streak in 2019.
I GOT FIVE 20 ON IT: With his third-inning two-run bomb, 1B Joey Meneses became the fastest Red Wing to reach 20 home runs in a season since Adam Brett Walker did so in the same number of games in 2016 (91 games)...the veteran is just three home runs away from his career-high of 23 bombs from his 2018 MVP-season...Meneses ended up finishing last night's game going 2-for-5 with three RBI, marking his 27th multi-hit game this season (second most on club, Stevenson, 30)....the Mexico-native now ranks second in the International League in the home run category with 20 shots this season, just one back of League Leader Tristan Gray (21, DUR)...Meneses is the first player in the Nationals' affiliation era to hit 20 homers in a season.
SHOOK ONES (LEFTY'S): After going just 2.2 innings and giving up two earned runs, Scranton starter LHP Ken Waldichuk has an 8.53 ERA against Rochester this season (6.1 IP/6 ER)...Rochester is tied for the International League-lead in batting average versus lefties (.280, tie w/ JAX) with four players on the current roster ranking in the top 20 in batting average against southpaws...today, the Wings will face off against LHP JP Sears, who gave up his only homers of the season in his last outing against Rochester (3, 6/15), including bombs to both 1B Joey Meneses and 2B Jake Noll.
Both Waldichuk (4) and Sears (3) season-high runs allowed came against Rochester
Against teams that aren't the Red Wings, Waldichuk has a 2.63 ERA (37.2 IP/11ER)
Against teams that aren't the Red Wings, Sears has a 0.84 ERA (32.1 IP/3ER)
99 PROBLEMS, BUT PEREZ AINT ONE: LHP Francisco Perez tied his season-high innings pitched in last night's loss, tossing two full innings of relief (also against SWB 5/8)...the southpaw now has five-consecutive relief appearances without allowing a run (7.0 IP)...Perez has allowed an earned run in just five of his 25 appearances this season...his 3.16 ERA (XX/XX) this year is the third best in the Wings bullpen.
ALL EYEZ ON ILDEMARO: After going 3-for-21 in his first series against Scranton (6/14 - 6/19), SS Ildemaro Vargas went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI...since joining the squad on May 28, the Venezuela-native ranks second on the Wings roster with 11 doubles.
THE NOTORIOUS C.A.D.E: RHP Cade Cavalli will get the start today as Rochester looks to take the second game of the series against Scranton...the Nationals' top prospect is yet to allow a run this month, striking out 13 batters without allowing a free pass in two July starts (10.2 IP)...since May 22, Cavalli has just a 2.32 ERA, allowing more than one run in just two of his eight starts over that span...the 2019 MiLB strikeout king leads the club in strikeouts this season with 74, good for a 9.4 K/9.
PARTY LIKE IT'S 1990: The Wings will celebrate the 1990's decade at the ballpark tonight...the Wings had an eventful decade in the 90's, one that featured a perfect game, a no-hitter, five playoff appearances, two Governor's Cup Championships ('90, '97) and the saying "goodbye" to Silver Stadium, a place they called home for nearly 70 years, and the opening of Frontier Field...the Wings would wind up going 735-692 in the 90's...Some more notable occurrences are below:
SS Cal Ripken Jr. was named American League MVP in '91
RHP Mike Mussina was named International League Most Valuable Pitcher in '91
Wings were no-hit in a 7-inning contest by Columbus starter Mariano Rivera in '95
Wings' General Manager Dan Mason was named Executive of the Year in '96 & '97, similar to Michael Jordan.
