Jacksonville Win 11-Inning Affair in Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va. - The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp won the season series against the Norfolk Tides with a 4-3, 11-ining win Saturday night at Harbor Park.

Jacksonville (67-69, 35-27) took the lead in the top of the 11th. With Griffin Conine starting as the ghost runner at second, C.J. Hinojosa flew out and Conine advanced to third. A wild pitch from Norfolk (83-53, 35-27) reliever Kyle Dowdy (L, 8-4) to put the Jumbo Shrimp ahead for the final time 4-3.

Jacksonville took the initial lead in the top of the fourth. Brian Miller led off with a single and went to second as Jerar Encarnacion drew a walk. A groundout put runners on second and third for Conine, who drove in Miller with a sac fly to bring in the game's first run.

Norfolk took until the eighth inning to get on the board. Lewin Díaz led off with a single and Joseph Rosa walked. Díaz was lifted for a pinch runner, Shayne Fontana. Ramón Rodriguez reached first on a sac bunt that turned into a fielding error that loaded the bases. Three batters later, Coby Mayo drove in two runs with a base hit giving the Tides a 2-1 lead.

The Jumbo Shrimp knotted the game back up in the top of the ninth. Charles Leblanc walked and Conine singled. With runners on first and second, Hinojosa brought in Leblanc with an RBI single tying the game at two.

The lead was regained by the Jumbo Shrimp in the top of the 10th. Troy Johnston began the inning at second and Jorge Alfaro walked. Miller bunted the runners up to second and third and Encarnacion was intentionally walked to load the bases. Leblanc grounded into a force out but Johnston scored from third to give the Jumbo Shrimp a 3-2 advantage.

The Tides evened the game in the bottom of the 10th. Fontana began the inning at second and went to third on Jacksonville's second fielding error of the game. Rosa reached on the error and Fontana scored from third on a sac fly from Colton Cowser.

The Jumbo Shrimp and Tides conclude their series Sunday at 1:05 p.m. LHP Daniel Castano (5-1, 4.06 ERA) gets the ball for Jacksonville and Norfolk will counter with LHP Cade Povich (1-3, 7.22 ERA). Coverage begins at 12:50 p.m. on ESPN 690 and espn690.com.
