Syracuse Mets News Release
Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Mets beat both the Rochester Red Wings and Mother Nature on Saturday night, as Syracuse took a 2-1 decision in a game that was completed early in the bottom of the seventh inning due to steady rain that rolled into NBT Bank Stadium. The Mets have now taken three out of the first four games in the series.
In the top of the third inning, Rochester (61-72, 27-33) opened the scoring via a familiar face. As Jordy Barley stood on second base with two outs, Darren Baker slapped a single into left field to plate Barley and make it a 1-0 game. Baker finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate and now has at least two hits in each of the first four games in this week's series.
From there, it was the Peyton Battenfield show on the mound for Syracuse (55-78, 22-37), as the starting pitcher starred in his Mets organization debut. The right-hander allowed just one run on five hits in six and two-thirds innings pitched, striking out two batters while surrendering two walks. Battenfield began the season with the Cleveland Guardians organization, pitching for both the Big League club and the Triple-A team in Columbus up until he was designated for assignment on August 31st. Battenfield was claimed off waivers by the New York Mets last week. In fact, Battenfield started against the Syracuse Mets with the Columbus Clippers back on August 17th.
While Battenfield was wowing the crowd on the mound, the offense for the Mets did just enough to claim victory on Saturday night. In the fourth, Syracuse scratched across a run to tie the game, 1-1. Joe Suozzi started the frame with a single, and Brandon McIlwain walked to put two runners on base with nobody out. A groundout advanced Suozzi to third, and then Suozzi promptly scored when Jaylen Palmer lofted a fly ball to the center field that was plenty deep enough for the game-tying sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the sixth, Suozzi was in the thick of the scoring action yet again, walking to start the inning, moving to third on a McIlwain single, and then scoring the eventual game-winning run when Nick Meyer grounded into a double play for a 2-1 Syracuse lead.. Suozzi finished the night with both runs scored for Syracuse.
While Saturday evening's game didn't complete seven innings, there were several offensive highlights for the Syracuse Mets. Wyatt Young finished the game with three hits, fresh off a two-hit night on Friday. Five of the nine Mets starters reached base at least twice, including two walks for Abraham Almonte and a walk and a single for Brandon McIlwain. Finally, Danny Mendick continued what has been an über-impressive week at the plate. Mendick went 2-for-3 with two singles and a walk. Mendick has at least two hits in each of the four games this week, going a combined 10-for-17 with three doubles and seven runs driven in.
Syracuse wraps up its week at home against the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, the Rochester Red Wings, on Sunday afternoon The fifth game of the series is slated for a 1:05 p.m. start with right-hander Justin Jarvis slated to start for the Mets against right-hander Alemao Hernandez for the Red Wings.
