JACKSONVILLE, FL - Bulls designated hitter Jonathan Aranda and catcher Blake Hunt each smashed two homers and left fielder Ben Gamel drove in two runs, while C Austin Allen knocked a two-run homer and recorded a game-winning three RBI double in Jacksonville's a 9-8 victory over the Durham Bulls on Wednesday evening at Financial Ballpark.
The Bulls struck early in the first when Aranda smashed his first homer of the night before Gamel drove in a run. Hunt recorded a three-run homer in the same frame, and knocked his second homer in the fourth frame, giving the Bulls a 6-0 lead. The Jumbo Shrimp answered when Allen mashed a two-run homer. Gamel recorded his second RBI of the night in the following inning, followed by Aranda's second homer in the eighth. 3B Jordan Groshans and RF Jerar Encarnacion each homered and combined to drive in four runs, before Allen's three-run double secured Jacksonville's 9-8 win.
Jacksonville right-hander Johnny Cueto (4.2 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 3 BB, 6 SO) earned the victory in part of his Major League Rehab Assignment, while Durham starter Nathan Wiles (6.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 4 SO) suffered the loss.
The two teams are set to continue their series on Thursday evening, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm ET. LHP Jacob Lopez is anticipated to get the nod for Durham and be opposed by LHP Devin Smeltzer.
After that series, Durham returns home to Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Monday, July 4 to start a six-game series versus the Norfolk Tides, the Triple-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. First pitch for that contest is scheduled for 6:35pm.
