Isotopes Surrender Hard-Fought Game to Zephyrs 6-3 in 10 Innings

June 16, 2014 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release

NEED TO KNOW: The Albuquerque Isotopes (31-38) led most of the way, but in the end, it was the New Orleans Zephyrs (38-32) with the final punch in the 10th inning of a hard-fought, 6-3 game at Isotopes Park Sunday night.

THE TURNING POINT: New Orleans tied the game with a pair of solo home runs in the top of the eighth inning, but Albuquerque had plenty of chances to win it in the home half of the eighth and ninth. After leaving runners on second and third in the bottom of the eighth, the Isotopes loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the ninth. Joc Pederson and Clint Robinson notched back-to-back singles to get the ninth rolling before Alex Liddi was intentionally walked to load the bases. The Zephyrs brought in a fifth infielder, but he was not needed as Johnny Monell hit a groundball to the pitcher. He started a 1-2-3 double play and struck out the next batter to escape the jam. In total, the Topes left 13 runners on base Sunday night, including seven left in scoring position in the last four innings.

C. ROB HIT, C. ROB DRIVE IN RUNS: Clint Robinson turned in a 4-for-4 night, including a double, two RBI, one run scored and an intentional walk. In his last 17 games, Robinson has 17 RBI. He now has 48 ribbies on the season, which moves him into a tie for fifth-most in the Pacific Coast League.

DECEPTIVE DEMEL: Starting pitcher Sam Demel tossed five innings of four-hit, one-run ball and turned the game over to his bullpen with a 3-1 lead. He also struck out six and walked only two. In four of his six starts this season, Demel has allowed two runs or fewer, including three starts that he's allowed one run or fewer.

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS: Close games continue to the norm for the Topes this season, especially over the last month. In the previous 30 games, 24 were decided by three runs or less - including a one-run decision in 12 of the last 23 games. Overall this season, the Topes are 11-11 in one-run games, 6-9 intwo-run games and 3-4 in three-run games.

KEEPING THE BALL DOWN: The Isotopes pitching staff has surrendered 13 home runs in the seven games on this homestand, including seven in the last two games.

ON DECK: Albuquerque and New Orleans will play the finale of a four-game series Monday afternoon at 12:05 p.m. Right-hander Carlos Frias (3-4, 6.19 ERA) will take the hill for the Isotopes, and the Zephyrs will go with left-hander Brian Flynn (6-4, 3.14 ERA).

IN THE HOLE: Following the four-game set against the Zephyrs, the Isotopes will hit the road for an eight-game trip with stops at Omaha and at Iowa.
