Iowa Cubs News Release
Sacramento, CA - The Sacramento River Cats (41-30) got a quality start from Matt Buschmann and used a balance offensive attack to defeat the Iowa Cubs (34-34) 5-1 on Monday afternoon at Raley Field. The Cubs finish their eight-game road trip with a 2-6 mark and have lost consecutive series for the first time this season.
Buschmann tied his season-high with six strikeouts in six innings and scattered five hits in cruising to his fifth win of the season. The right-hander registered his third quality start in nine triple-A starts, but only his second in five outings at home. Buschmann had to deal with multiple base runners only once, and got Brett Jackson to hit into a 3-6-1 double play in the second inning to escape the jam.
The 'Cats bats backed Buschmann with 14 hits as all nine players collected a knock. Tyler Ladendorf, Shane Peterson and Nick Buss registered multi-hit games. Peterson continued his onslaught of Cubs pitching with three singles as he finished the four-game series 9-for-14 (.643) with four RBI. He also made a terrific diving catch to rob Matt Szczur of a RBI hit in the fourth inning.
Sacramento scored first in their opening at-bat with three two-out hits as Peterson drove in Daric Barton with a solid single to center field. The River Cats added to their lead in the third inning, getting an unearned run off Chris Rusin. Ladendorf singled, advanced to third when Rusin couldn't handle a toss from Arismendy Alcantara on a chopper to the right side and scored on a Jose Martinez sacrifice fly to center.
Ryan Kalish got the Cubs on the board in the sixth inning with a home run just over the right field fence to cut the deficit in half. It was his second long ball in an Iowa uniform and first in his last 15 games. Kalish is hitting .280 (7-for-25) with five runs and five RBI in his last eight games.
The 'Cats would answer right back, breaking the game open with a three-run sixth inning on four hits and a walk. After Rusin retired the first batter of the inning, the next five hitters reached base. Andy Parrino hit a soft single just inside the right field line to drive in a pair, but was thrown out at second base trying to stretch the hit into a double.Ladendorf followed with his third single of the contest to score Jake Elmore before Rusin struck out Barton looking to finish the 27-pitch inning.
Rusin allowed four earned runs on a career-high 13 hits -- 12 singles -- in six innings of work. He walked one, struck out three and threw 66 of his 107 pitches for strikes. After throwing four consecutive quality starts in which he gave up a combined 23 hits, Rusin surrendered 22 base knocks and 11 runs in nine innings in two outings on the road trip. This was Rusin's third career start against the River Cats and in his first two he didn't allow a run in 15 innings.
RH Frank Batista relieved Rusin and gave up one hit in two scoreless innings. Batista has a combined 3.53 ERA (4ER/10.2IP) between double-A Tennessee and Iowa this year.
Chris Valaika had two of the Cubs five hits with a pair of doubles for his team-leading 20th multi-hit game.
The I-Cubs have been held to four runs or fewer in 16 of the last 20 games. They are 6-29 when they fail to score more than four runs in games this season.
Iowa lost for just fourth time in 23 day games this year.
The Cubs return to Principal Park to start an eight-game home stand Tuesday night at 7:05 with the first ever meeting against the El Paso Chihuahuas. LH Eric Jokisch (5-6, 3.64) takes the ball for the Cubs against RH Matt Wisler (3-4, 6.69). The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 and streamed live at iowacubs.com with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:45 p.m.
