PCL Tabs Player and Pitcher of the Week

June 16, 2014 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release

ROUND ROCK, Texas - The league office announced today that Jared Hoying of the Round Rock Express and Ryan Verdugo of the Omaha Storm Chasers have been named Pacific Coast League Player and Pitcher of the Week for their performances during the week of June 9th-15th.

Jared Hoying collected a PCL-best 13 hits, ten runs, and ten RBIs last week, while helping Round Rock to a six-game win streak on the road. The center fielder also added two home runs, three stolen bases, and his .464 batting average ranked fourth in the league. He scored at least one run in each of the seven games he played in and compiled four multi-hit performances. Hoying's first home run of the week as well as three RBIs came on June 10th in the Express' 7-5 win at Albuquerque. The following game he tacked on three more RBIs and recorded his first four-hit game of the season. The Ohio native has produced 12 home runs and 40 RBIs this season.

Hoying, 25, began his professional career in 2010 after being drafted by the Texas Rangers in the tenth round out of the University of Toledo. The 2014 season marks his second at the Triple-A level, where he has accumulated 108 hits with the Express. The Player of the Week accolade is the second of his career, with the other coming in 2010 as a member of the Spokane Indians in the Northwest League.

Ryan Verdugo earned two wins last week and has now won four-consecutive starts for the Storm Chasers. The left-hander tossed 12.2 scoreless innings and walked just one batter in his two outings, while his 15 strikeouts were the second most in the PCL. In his first start on June 9th, he limited the Sacramento River Cats to one hit in six innings. Verdugo then shutout the Fresno Grizzlies for 6.2 frames in a seven-inning contest on June 14th, and was one out away from his first career complete game. The 27-year-old owns a 2.52 ERA and .190 opponents' average in five starts this season with Omaha.

Verdugo is in his seventh professional season since the San Francisco Giants selected him in the ninth round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft. The Louisiana State University alum was acquired by the Kansas City Royals in a 2011 trade that sent Melky Cabrera to the Giants. The next season he made his major league debut as a starting pitcher with the Royals. Verdugo's only other Pitcher of the Week award came June 6, 2011, as a member of the Richmond Flying Squirrels in the Eastern League.
