Round Rock Express News Release
El Paso, Texas - The Round Rock Express (33-37) battled back from three down in the ninth Sunday to force extra innings before suffering a 5-4 loss to the El Paso Chihuahuas (33-38) in 12 innings at Southwest University Park.
The E-Train fought hard to keep their winning streak alive, but in the end, it came to a screeching halt at a season-high six games.
The Chihuahuas pounced on the Express with two runs in the second to take the lead early. RF Jeff Francoeur doubled with one out and scored when DH Travis Buck followed with a double of his own. After advancing to third on a balk, Buck scored the second run of the inning on a two-out single by C Rocky Gale to put El Paso up 2-0.
In the fourth, E-Train alum 2B Brooks Conrad took Round Rock starter Miles Mikolas deep to center to lead off the inning with another El Paso run. Conrad, who hit 80 home runs for the Express from 2004-2007, leads the Chihuahuas with 14 round trippers this season.
Round Rock got on the board in the sixth when Saturday night's star DH Bryan Petersen plated RF Carlos Arroyo with a one-out base hit. Arroyo led off with a single to center, moved to third when 2B Kensuke Tanaka followed suit and came around to touch home plate on Petersen's infield single. After being held to just one hit through the first five innings, the Express seemed to have something cooking with a run in, runners on first and third and one out in the inning. However, Chihuahua starter Donn Roach got C J.P. Arencibia to ground into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play to foil the rally.
Both Mikolas and Roach had to settle for no decisions, despite turning quality starts. Mikolas allowed three runs over six innings, striking out five and walking none, while Roach permitted one run in seven innings of work.
El Paso plated another run in the seventh on an RBI single by CF Rico Noel to make it 4-1 Chihuahuas.
Down to their final three outs, the E-Train rallied to score three runs off El Paso's LHP Bobby LaFromboise, keeping hopes of extending their winning streak alive. Petersen lined a single back through the box to lead off the inning. After a strikeout, CF Jared Hoying blasted his 12th home run of the season over the right field wall to pull Round Rock to within one. 3B Adam Rosales followed Hoying's homer with a double to right and scored when 1B Brett Nicholas came through with a clutch, game-tying RBI double to knot the game at 4-4.
The game would remain tied until the eventful 12th inning. El Paso 3B Jonathan Galvez lifted a high fly ball to shallow right field to lead off the home half. Round Rock's right fielder Arroyo, bounding forward at full speed, over ran the ball which fell to the turf and kicked down the right field line, allowing Galvez to motor around to third base with what was ruled a triple. After intentionally walking the next two batters to load the bases, LHP Aaron Poreda (0-1, 3.09 ERA) surrendered a walk-off base hit to LF Alex Castellanos to end the game and Round Rock's winning streak.
Poreda took his first loss of the season in heartbreaking fashion, allowing one run on two hits in 1.1 innings. He struck out two and intentionally walked two.
Chihuahua RHP Michael Nix (3-2, 5.04 ERA) picked up the win after tossing two innings of scoreless relief.
The Express will conclude their 12-game road trip with Monday's series finale with the Chihuahuas at Southwest University Park. LHP Ryan Feierabend (6-5, 4.20 ERA) is scheduled to start for Round Rock against RHP Billy Buckner (4-2, 4.07 ERA). First pitch is set for 8:05 p.m. CDT.
