Sacramento River Cats News Release
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Sacramento River Cats cruised past the Iowa Cubs by a score of 5-1 on Monday afternoon at Raley Field, taking 3-out-of-4 games against the American Northern division squad. The River Cats amassed 14 hits-13 of which were singles-and held the Cubs offense to only one run on five hits.
The Cats (41-30) struck first in the bottom of the first inning on a Shane Peterson line-drive single that plated second baseman Tayler Ladendorf, giving Sacramento an early 1-0 lead. The River Cats tacked on another run in the bottom of the third to go up 2-0 on a sac-fly by designated hitter Jose Martinez.
The Cubs (34-34) finally got on the board in the top of the sixth on a solo home run by designated hitter Ryan Kalish, giving him four RBI in the series.
Sacramento added to their lead in bottom half of the sixth, scoring three runs in the frame to give them a 5-1 advantage. Highlighting the sixth inning was a ground-rule double by catcher Ryan Ortiz, a two-run single by third baseman Andy Parrino, and an RBI-single off the bat of Ladendorf.
Peterson finished the game 3-for-4 with an RBI and Ladendorf went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Ortiz wound up 1-for-4 with a double and a run on the day and had the only extra-base hit for the River Cats. In his first game back after being with the Oakland Athletics for three games, Parrino went 1-for-4 with two RBI.
River Cats starter Matt Buschmann (5-2, 4.88 ERA) earned his fifth win of the season after allowing only one run on five hits to go with six strikeouts in six innings of work.
Sacramento relievers Fernando Rodriguez and Justin Marks combined for three scoreless innings without yielding a hit while striking out five.
Iowa lefty Chris Rusin (4-9, 4.02 ERA) took the loss after giving up five runs (four earned) on 13 hits and a walk and striking out three. He now has had a decision in all 13 of his starts this season.
The Sacramento River Cats head to Texas to take on the Round Rock Express-Triple-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers-for a four-game set at the Dell Diamond. The River Cats will get the series started with right-hander Arnold Leon (6-2, 5.35 ERA) who will go up against Express righty Daniel McCutchen (1-5, 7.66 ERA).
The Cats return Raley Field on Thursday, June 26 to face the Las Vegas 51s for a four-game set. The Thirsty Thursday matchup between the Cats and 51s will be nationally televised on CBS Sports with the first pitch slated for 7:05 p.m.
