September 1, 2005 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
Starting pitcher Travis Smith pitched eight brilliant innings and infielder Jason Wood hammered a pair of two-run homers to lead the Albuquerque Isotopes (77-63) to a 6-1 victory over the Round Rock Express (73-67) Thursday night at Isotopes Park; thus completing a four-game sweep of the American Southern Divisional rival. Nonetheless, at the end of the night the âTopes, who have won seventh straight contest and 10 of their last 11, still remain a half game behind first-place Oklahoma, who defeated the New Orleans Zephyrs 9-3.
The Isotopes drew 10,001 fans Thursday night to lift the yearly total to 582, 839 and set the single-season record for the three-year franchise.
Smith (7-7) allowed just four hits, including a two-out, solo homer by Barry Wesson in the fifth, and retired 13 consecutive batters at one point to earn the win. Joe Dillon had a game-high three hits for the âTopes, including a double. For the game, the âTopes out-hit Round Rock, 13-.5
Albuquerque jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning off Round Rock starter Brian Tollberg (4-3) with all its damage coming with two outs. After a fly out by Eric Reed and a strike out of Josh Wilson, Joe Dillon doubled down the left field line. Last night's hero, Todd Sears followed with a single to right field that got the âTopes on the board before Wood homered down the left-field line.
The Isotopes recorded another big inning in the fifth. Reed led off with a single and moved to second on a base hit by Wilson. Reed swiped third base before Dillon's sacrifice fly pushed Albuquerque's lead to 4-1. Sears grounded into a force out to set the stage for Wood, who came through with another big homer - a two-run shot that broke the game open.
The âTopes will close out the regular season with a four-game series at Memphis beginning Friday night at 6:05. Right-handed pitcher Ariel Prieto (9-5, 3.99) is scheduled to start for Albuquerque against Redbirds righty Anthony Reyes (7-6, 3.82).
Tickets are available at the Isotopes Park Box Office, at local Ticketmaster outlets, Ticketmaster.com, and Ticketmaster by phone at 883-7800.
