PCL1 Pacific Coast League

PCL surpasses seven million fan milestone

September 1, 2005 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - With its 16 teams averaging over 6,500 fans per game, the Pacific Coast League passed the 7-million fan mark yesterday, a first for any single circuit in a season in Minor League Baseball history, the League announced today.

The League had set a new single season record when it eclipsed the 6.8 million fan mark on August 26, and now celebrates the achievement of 7-million fans, a goal set at the beginning of the year.

President Branch Rickey summed up the PCL achievement saying, "The applause belongs to the teams. They are the ones who provided the fans an experience on such an exceptional level that enabled the League overall to reach this previously unattained plateau."

Earlier this week, Oklahoma and Albuquerque announced new single season attendance records and Sacramento, with one more opening, has drawn over 10,400 fans per game, 740,000 overall.

The individual clubs have shown amazing increases. Oklahoma is up more than 1,100 fans per game from 2004 and the PCL's newest member Round Rock surpassed the 700,000 mark with Memphis nearing 10,000 fans per game.

The League failed to pass the 7-million mark on the projected date of Tuesday, August 30, due to five openings lost in areas effected by Hurricane Katrina.

Current projection are for the final regular season total to near 7.3 million.
