Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - The San Diego Padres today recalled Portland right-handed pitcher Chris Oxspring, left-handed pitcher Craig Breslow and first baseman/outfielder Paul McAnulty, as major league rosters were expanded from 25 to 40.

Additionally, the Portland Beavers added infielder Manny Alexander to their roster. Alexander was acquired from the Texas Rangers organization on Wednesday in exchange for Padres minor league pitcher Juan Jimenez.

It marks the first major league promotion for Oxspring, who was 12-6 with a 4.03 ERA and 125 strikeouts over 160.2 innings pitched in 26 starts with Portland this season. Oxspring, 28, set a new five-year franchise record for victories and innings pitched this season, and was twice named the Pacific Coast League's Pitcher of the Week.

Oxspring, who has an 18-10 record and a 4.02 ERA in 43 starts over two seasons with the Beavers, leads the PCL in victories and ranks among the league leaders in complete games (3; tied for first), shutouts (2; tied for first), ERA (eighth) and strikeouts (fourth).

Oxspring began his career in the independent Frontier League in 2000 before signing with the Padres as a minor league free agent on Sept. 19, 2000.

Breslow, 25, returns to San Diego, where he has a 0-0 record and a 2.08 ERA in six relief appearances this year. With the Beavers, Breslow was 0-1 with a 4.00 ERA in seven appearances.

Breslow began his career as a 26th-round draft pick of the Milwaukee Brewers in 2002 and signed with the Padres this season.

McAnulty, too, makes a return trip to San Diego. The fourth-year professional batted .222 with two runs scored in 10 games (9 at-bats) in his first major league stint with the club earlier this season. With the Beavers, McAnulty, 24, batted .344 with six home runs, 15 doubles and 27 RBIs in 38 games.

McAnulty was originally a 12th-round selection of the Padres in the 2002 draft.

Alexander, 34, played in 108 games for the Rangers' Triple-A Oklahoma affiliate this season, batting .309 with 12 home runs, 23 doubles, six triples and 67 RBIs. The veteran infielder has played in 562 major league games during his 18-year career, playing for Baltimore, New York (NL), Chicago (NL), Boston and Texas.
