Last regular season home game for Omaha

September 1, 2005 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

TONIGHT: The Royals conclude their regular season home schedule vs. Iowa. Omaha leads the series 2-1 and is 6-6 on the home stand. Air-time is 6:45 p.m. on Magic 1490 and at www.Oroyals.com.

LAST NIGHT: The Royals wrapped up their best month in more than seven years with a 6-2 victory over Iowa. Omaha moved to within 1.5 games of first place Nashville in the PCL's American Conference North, as the Sounds were swept in a doubleheader at Memphis, losing 3-0 and 1-0. The Royals never trailed after sending eight batters to the plate in the 1st inning and scoring twice off Sergio Mitre (5-6). Chris George (8-7) got his first win at home, giving up just one run in 4.1 innings of relief. Denny Bautista fired 2.2 hitless innings in the second start of his second rehab assignment with Omaha. Jared Price's two-run homer capped a three-run 6th inning, as the Royals took a 5-1 lead.

ROYALS REPORT: While the month of August was the worst month in KC history, with the parent club going 5-21, it was the best month for Omaha since June of 1998. The O-Royals went 21-9 (.700) in August, their best record in a month since the '98 club went 20-7 (.741) in June. That team also won 20 games in July (20-9) en route to a 79-64 finish. However, Omaha finished second in its division in its first season in the PCL in 1998 and did not make the playoffs. *** Omaha lost another big bat from its lineup today, as first baseman Justin Huber was called up by KC. Huber joins Aaron Guiel and Matt Diaz as position players who have been promoted in the past week, along with starter J.P. Howell. Huber hit .274 with seven homers and 23 RBI in 32 games with Omaha and had a .314 average (16-51) with six home runs and eleven RBI in his last 16 contests. *** George was 0-6 with a 6.46 ERA this season at home, before getting the win last night. *** Justin Huisman extended his scoreless streak to 14.0 innings with a perfect 8th inning last night, but then gave up a run on two hits in the 9th. *** Price has homered in back-to-back games and has slugged three round-trippers in his last four starts. *** Calvin Pickering posted his second straight three-hit game last night. "Pick" is hitting .325 (13-40) on the home stand, belting four homers and driving in ten runs in eleven games. *** Chad Santos is hitting at a torrid .377 clip (20-53) over his last 14 tilts and owns a .391 average (18-46) with nine RBI in eleven games vs. Iowa. *** Chris Truby is 8-for-his-last-25 (.320). *** Rudy Gomez has hit in eight of his past nine starts, going 10-for-33 (.303). *** Scott Walter was activated from the DL prior to last night's game, but did not play.

STARTERS: RH Bobby Brownlie (6-6, 4.70) vs. RH Danny Tamayo (8-8, 5.41) Tamayo makes his club-leading 27th start (30th appearance) of the season. The 26-year old right-hander's last appearance was in relief, as he followed rehab starter Bautista to the mound last Saturday vs. Oklahoma. Tamayo was impressive, but did not get the win in the Royals' 4-3 victory (6.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K, 1 HR). The "W" went to Huisman, after Huber hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 8th. In two starts vs. Iowa, Tamayo is 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA. In 2004, Tamayo was named by KC as the Royals Minor League Pitcher of the Year. He spent most of last season with Wichita, going 12-7 with a 3.92 ERA in 25 starts, allowing only 36 walks and striking out 123 batters, in 142.1 innings. Tamayo was KC's 10th round pick in 2001 out of Notre Dame.
