Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA - Royals starter Danny Tamayo gave up a two-run homer in the top of the first, but settled down after that, helping the Royals to a 4-3 win over the Iowa Cubs. Omaha's third straight win in its regular season home finale at Rosenblatt Stadium was witnessed by a crowd of 5,854 fans and moved the Royals closer to first place in the PCL's American Conference North.
Tamayo (9-8) surrendered a leadoff single to Calvin Murray to begin the contest. Murray stole second base prior to Mike Fontenot belting Tamayo's 3-2 pitch over the right field wall to put Iowa on top 2-0.
Scott Walter, who just came off the disabled list Wednesday and was playing in his first game since early August, smacked a solo homer in his first at-bat. Walter's eighth home run of the season off Iowa starter Bobby Brownlie (6-7) cut the Cubs' lead in half. Jaime Jones tied the game by leading off the bottom of the third with a home run that clanged off the right field foul pole.
The Royals took the lead in unusual fashion in the fourth. Calvin Pickering walked to lead off the inning and then stole second base. It was Pickering's first steal (outside of the Mexican League) since the 2000 season. Brownlie struck out Walter and Chad Santos. But, Justin Gemoll's flair into center field dropped just in front of Calvin Murray and Pickering beat Murray's throw to the plate, sliding in safely with the go-ahead run.
Iowa tied the game with an unearned run off Tamayo in the seventh. Richard Lewis led off the inning and was safe on a two-base throwing error by shortstop Andres Blanco. After moving to third on a sacrifice bunt, Lewis scored on Cody Ransom's sacrifice fly to even the score at 3-all.
Chris Truby came through in the clutch in the bottom of the seventh to decide the contest. With two outs and runners at first and second and Truby behind in the count 1-and-2, he fouled off several of Brownlie's pitches before lining a curve ball into center field, scoring Jared Price with the go-ahead run.
In the top of the eighth, Mike Fontenot looped a leadoff double into shallow center field and took third on a fly out. Jaime Cerda relieved Tamayo and struck out Ben Grieve swinging at a slider and froze Nate Frese looking at a fastball on the outside corner to preserve the one-run lead.
Cerda gave up a leadoff single to Micah Hoffpauir in the ninth. Santiago Ramirez came on and, while Hoffpauir was able to steal second base with one out, Ramirez retied all three Iowa batters he faced to earn his 16th save. Omaha (71-69) finished the home stand 7-6 and, with Nashville losing the first game of a doubleheader at Memphis, closed to within a half-game of the Sounds pending the outcome of the nightcap.
The Royals play at Oklahoma Friday: air-time is 6:45 p.m. on Magic 1490 and www.Oroyals.com.
