Green named PCL's most valuable player

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Tucson's Andy Green has been named the 2005 Pacific Coast League Most Valuable Player, an honor annually chosen by the League's managers and media representatives, the League announced today.
Green, 28, from Lexington, Kentucky, leads the League in almost every hitting category. He is first in hits (182), doubles (46), extra-base hits (78), runs scored (125) and triples (13). He has a season average of .343 with 19 home runs, 80 RBI, and has reached base either with a hit or a walk in all but 14 games this year, including 51 multi-hit games.
"It is an extreme honor," Green said upon being notified he was named the MVP. "Nothing I anticipated going into the season with so many quality baseball players, but it is nice to be recognized."
Signed by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 24th round of the 2000 Draft, Green made his Major League debut on June 12, 2004, with a two-run pinch hit home run off then-Yankee Jose Contreras on June 15th as his first Big League hit. Green was named the starting second baseman for the 2005 PCL All-Star team and the post-season All-PCL team.
Past PCL MVP's include 2004 winner, Dan Johnson, Tino Martinez in 1991, Tim Salmon, 1992, Paul Konerko in 1997, Joe DiMaggio in 1935, and Lefty O'Doul in 1927.
New Orleans' Rick Short, Nashville's Corey Hart, and Round Rock's Mike Coolbaugh were among the players also considered to receive the 2005 award.
