Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - Mike Baxter went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Chris Young and Josh Geer combined on a three-hitter to lead the Portland Beavers past the Las Vegas 51s 6-2 before 7,647 at PGE Park Sunday afternoon.

Mike Jacobs ended the combined no-hit bid in the seventh with a leadoff homer against Geer (11-11), who gave up two runs on three hits in 5 2/3 innings of relief to become the fourth pitcher in Beavers history to win 11 games.

Craig Stansberry broke the Beavers (58-85) franchise record with his 90th career double, passing Jon Knott in the fourth inning. Josh Barfield added his fifth home run to help Portland end a three-game slide.

Young made his second rehab start for the Beavers and pitched scoreless 3 1/3 innings with two walks, no hits and three strikeouts. He threw 39 of 63 pitches for strikes.

Scott Richmond (1-1) took the loss after four innings in which he allowed six runs (3 earned) on seven hits and two walks. Lance Broadway pitched four scoreless frames behind Richmond.

With runners on first and second and two out in the third, Baxter lined a single to right field that Aaron Mathews mishandled, allowing both runs to score. Jody Gerut's ensuing single plated Baxter from third.

Portland scored three more in the fourth. Barfield homered off the left-center field scoreboard before Stansberry's double. Nick Green singled to right and Mathews again committed an error to let Stansberry cross the plate. Sean Kazmar reached on another error by third baseman Brad Emaus and Baxter cashed it in with an RBI single to right.

After Jacobs broke up the no-hit bid in the seventh, Danny Perales doubled and scored in the eighth.

The Beavers and 51s play the final game at PGE Park Monday afternoon at 2:05 p.m. (Pacific).

NOTES: With the win, the Beavers clinched the season series over Las Vegas ... the four errors by Las Vegas were a season high for a Beavers opponent ... the game's two relief pitchers - Lance Broadway for Las Vegas and Geer - pitched at least as many innings as their starting counterparts ... Kyle Phillips legged out a triple to center in the fifth inning, his second of the season ... Baxter became the 10th player in franchise history to hit 30 doubles in one season.
