Indianapolis Indians News Release
ST. PAUL, Minn. - A three-run seventh inning, capped by a two-run single off the bat of catcher Jason Delay, wasn't enough as the Indianapolis Indians lost their first game of the six-game series to the St. Paul Saints on Friday night, 6-4.
The loss was Indianapolis' first since last Thursday, April 7, and snapped its winning streak at five games. The streak tied the Indians' longest of the 2021 season (June 12-18 and Aug. 5-10).
After two scoreless innings to open the game, St. Paul (6-3) put up four runs in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded and one out, Royce Lewis drove in one run with a sacrifice fly and Mark Contreras followed with the first home run of the contest - - a three-run shot to right-center field. In the bottom of the sixth inning, a two-run homer off the bat of Curtis Terry extended the lead, putting the Saints beyond striking distance.
The Indianapolis (6-3) offense tallied three runs in the top of the seventh inning to cut the deficit in half. With two outs, Jared Oliva knocked his second double of the game to put the first run on the board, and Delay followed with a single to score two. The Indians tacked on another after a leadoff triple by Mason Martin in the top of the ninth, but the threat ended there.
RHP Cody Bolton (L, 0-1) got the start for Indianapolis and was charged with three earned runs. Five of St. Paul's six runs came via two longballs in the contest, marking the first time this season the Indians' pitching staff allowed multiple home runs in one game.
LHP Devin Smeltzer (W, 1-0) tossed 5.0 shutout innings en route to the win, and RHP Juan Minaya (S, 2) retired the final three Indians batters in order after surrendering the leadoff triple to Martin.
The Indians will look to get back on track in tomorrow's 3:07 PM ET contest at St. Paul. RHP Jerad Eickhoff (1-0, 2.45) will toe the rubber for the Indians to face St. Paul's LHP Lewis Thorpe (0-0, -.--).
