Memphis Redbirds News Release
MEMPHIS, TN - The Memphis Redbirds came from behind to take a three-run victory over the Charlotte Knights on Friday night at Truist Field in Charlotte.
The Redbirds scored three runs in the top of the seventh to take their first lead of the game. Pinch hitter Juan Yepez grounded into a fielder's choice to give Memphis a 3-2 lead. Second baseman Evan Mendoza followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home left fielder Ben DeLuzio and make the score 4-2.
Right fielder Conner Capel added an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning as he blasted a home run over the left field wall to give Memphis a 5-3 lead, his first home run of the season.
Third baseman Cory Spangenberg later singled off of the glove of diving Charlotte second baseman Zach Remillard in the ninth to push across the sixth and final run of the game for Memphis.
Connor Thomas worked quickly and efficiently in his second start of the season. The left-hander went four innings and allowed one unearned run on three hits and struck out a pair of Knights.
Packy Naughton (1-0) earned the win in relief. Naughton threw three innings, struck out six batters and allowed one run on three hits. Jake Walsh (2) earned the save after he recorded two strike outs in a scoreless bottom of the ninth.
With the win, Memphis (6-4) secured at least a split of the first road series of 2022. The Redbirds return to Truist Field on Saturday to take on the Charlotte Knights (4-6) at 6:05 CDT.
