Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (5-5) were held scoreless for seven innings, but scored five in the eighth inning to defeat the Toledo Mud Hens (3-7) by a score of 5-1, Friday at Principal Park.
Beau Brieske and Miguel Del Pozo combined to throw seven scoreless frames for Toledo, allowing just two hits while walking two and striking out seven total hitters. Their offense backed them with just one run, when Willi Castro singled in Brady Policelli in the third.
Iowa's starter Caleb Kilian spun four innings, allowing just one earned run on three hits. He was relieved by Matt Swarmer, who kept the deficit at one, allowing just two hits and three walks while striking out five over four innings pitched.
After recording just two hits through the first seven innings, Iowa scored five runs in the eighth, due in large part to one swing of the bat from Jared Young. Young welcomed Luis Castillo into the game by hitting the first pitch he threw over the center field wall, boosting Iowa's lead to 5-1.
Kevin McCarthy walked the leadoff batter, but struck out Jacob Robson and forced Policelli into a double play to end the game and earn Iowa's third win of the series.
