WORCESTER, M.A. - The Worcester Red Sox (8-2) and Lehigh Valley IronPigs (4-6) split the season's first doubleheader, a 7-3 win for the road team in game one and a 7-5 game two victory for the WooSox. The pair of games on Friday came in front of a sellout crowd of 8,036 at Polar Park.

Worcester won game two, in part, because of its the first offensive inning, throwing up six runs before the end of the frame. A sac-fly from Rob Refsnyder, a Ronaldo Hernandez three-run double and a Roberto Ramos two-run home run provided the scoring in the opening inning. Ramos' blast went 425 feet, his second 420+ foot home run of the season.

Lehigh Valley got one run in the second thanks to former WooSox Yairo Muñoz, who delivered an RBI single. Worcester's offense answered one inning later on an RBI double by Franchy Cordero, one of two doubles on the night for the 27-year-old.

The IronPigs managed two more in the fifth against Zack Kelly on run-scoring swings from Dalton Guthrie and Donny Sands. They also threatened in the seventh with a two-run double by Donny Sands, but Kaleb Ort got the final out to close out the win. The victory improves Worcester's record to 8-2 and clinches at least a series split this week against the IronPigs.

Hours earlier, the WooSox dominated the first four innings of game one, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the seven inning game. Jeter Downs opened the scoring in the bottom half of the first, launching a solo shot off the batter's eye in center. A frame later, Ryan Fitzgerald came to the plate with two on and knocked an RBI single, part of a two RBI game one. He grabbed the second RBI in the fourth with a smash off the centerfield wall, a ball that landed beneath the 403-foot sign. By the time it was retrieved, Yolmer Sanchez scored from second and Fitzgerald stood on third with an RBI triple.

Josh Winckowski got the game two start and went five innings, allowing two earned runs on a single by Dalton Guthrie. The right-hander exited after an error began the sixth inning, and from that point, Lehigh Valley took over the game. Reliever Durbin Feltman allowed a two-run home run to Nick Maton, the first batter after Winckowski's departure, to give the road team its first lead. Then, in the seventh, the IronPigs added two more on an RBI double from Guthrie. That made it 7-3, as the WooSox became the final team in Triple-A to reach two losses.

The WooSox continue the six-game series at Polar Park against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Saturday at 4:05 p.m. Television coverage begins at 4 p.m. on NESN+, while radio coverage is live at 3:45 p.m. on 98.9 Nash Icon and the WooSox Radio Network. Tickets are available at WooSox.com.
