
Toledo Hands Iowa First Home Loss

DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (4-5) allowed four runs over the final two innings, losing to the Toledo Mud Hens (3-6) by a score of 8-6, Thursday at Principal Park.
Iowa jumped on Mud Hens' starter Joey Wentz, scoring two runs in the first on a two-run blast from P.J. Higgins. They added a third run in the second inning, when Levi Jordan hit his second solo shot of the year.
Eric Stout kept Toledo off the board through his three innings of work, allowing just one hit and three walks while striking out four. He was relieved by Eric Yardley, who didn't have the same fortune. In 1.1 innings, the righty allowed three runs on four hits and two walks.
Narciso Crook answered with Iowa's third home run of the game, a solo shot to keep Iowa's lead at 4-3. Ryan Lavarnway blasted a solo home run to tie the game in the sixth, but once again, Iowa answered with two more runs in the home half.
Zack Short doubled to bring a run around in the eighth and Toledo took the lead with three runs in the ninth on a home run and two wild pitches. This time, Iowa didn't have an answer as Angel De Jesus spun a scoreless ninth inning to give Toledo the 8-6 win, their first of the series.
POSTGAME NOTES:
- Dixon Machado reached base in all five of his plate appearances tonight, going 2-for-2 with three walks. He also stole three bases and scored a run out of the leadoff spot.
- Iowa scored six runs on just six hits, with four of their six hits going for extra bases and three of the six leaving the yard.
- All but one starter recorded a hit for Toledo, with leadoff man Jack Lopez going 0-for-5 with three strikeouts.
- Toledo scored all eight of their runs in the final six frames, including four in the last two innings.
