Iowa Cubs News Release

MEMPHIS, TN - The Iowa Cubs (58-38) used nine late runs to move 20 games over .500 and take game two of the series over the Memphis Redbirds (49-49) by a final score of 10-7, Wednesday at AutoZone Park.

For the first time since Saturday night, Iowa didn't score in the opening frame. They didn't wait much longer tonight, as Jake Slaughter clubbed his 17th home run of the year in the second inning, a solo shot that put Iowa ahead 1-0.

Juan Yepez tied it with a two-out triple in the fourth, bringing in Luken Baker who had doubled earlier in the frame. That was the lone run Caleb Kilian would surrender, as the right-hander continued to trend in the right direction.

Kilian spun 5.2 innings of one-run ball, allowing five hits and two walks while also striking out two batters. Iowa regained the lead with a four-run sixth inning, getting a two-run single from Edwin Ríos, an RBI single from Alexander Canario and another run on a throwing error.

Already up 5-1, the I-Cubs got three more insurance runs in the seventh on one swing of the bat. Matt Mervis clubbed his 10th home run of the year and first since July 6, boosting Iowa's lead to 8-1.

Richie Palacios brought in a second run on an RBI single in the seventh, starting a comeback for Memphis. Home runs from Matt Koperniak and Moises Gomez in the eighth made it a three-run game, at 8-5.

Iowa scored two runs in the ninth to get back up by five, but once again, Memphis fought back. Singles from Baker and Koperniak made it 10-7, but Manuel Rodriguez entered the game and induced a double play to end it.

POSTGAME NOTES:

In his last six games, Caleb Kilian has gone 4-0 with a 2.61 ERA. He has allowed nine earned runs on 24 hits and nine walks, striking out 24 over his 31.0 innings pitched.

All nine starters in Iowa's lineup recorded a hit, as each of the top five hitters had multi-hit games. The five combined for 10 of the team's 15 total hits.

Iowa and Memphis will play game three of their six-game series tomorrow night, with first pitch from AutoZone Park set for 7:05 pm. You can listen to all Iowa Cubs games on Hope AM940 and stream them for free on the Bally Live App. For more information and tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
