Iowa Cubs News Release
BUFFALO, NY - The Iowa Cubs (9-4) pitching staff allowed just three hits to beat the Buffalo Bisons (6-9) by a score of 1-0, Wednesday at Sahlen Field.
Iowa scored the lone run of the game in the second inning, using three singles to push across a run. Jake Slaughter delivered the RBI single on a short pop fly to right field, driving in David Bote.
A 1-0 lead was all Iowa's staff would need, as starter Caleb Kilian had his best start of the year. The No. 17 overall prospect in the Cubs system and the seventh rated pitcher spun five scoreless innings, allowing just three hits while striking out four.
Opposite of Kilian was Casey Lawrence, who dropped his third game of the year, allowing just one earned run on five hits and one walk while striking out 10 batters in his six innings. Four pitchers came out of Iowa's bullpen to keep the shutout intact.
Ryan Borucki struck out one in his perfect sixth inning, Jeremiah Estrada worked around two walks to throw a scoreless seventh, Tyler Duffey walked one and struck one out in the eighth, and Manuel Rodriguez got out of a bases loaded jam with a double play to secure the victory.
POSTGAME NOTES:
Iowa's pitchers allowed just three hits while walking five and striking out seven over their nine scoreless innings.
Five of Iowa's nine starters recorded a hit tonight, while eight of the nine struck out and six of the nine struck out at least twice. Iowa struck out 15 times in tonight's 1-0 victory.
Despite snapping his three-game home run streak, Christopher Morel kept his hitting streak alive with a leadoff single to start the game. He now has a hit in seven consecutive games.
Iowa will take their 1-0 series lead into a doubleheader against Buffalo tomorrow, with first pitch of the 14 innings scheduled to start at 4:35 CT from Sahlen Field.
