Toledo Mud Hens News Release
Columbus, OH - At Huntington Park on Tuesday, the Toledo Mud Hens fell to the Columbus Clippers by a score of 4-1.
The Mud Hens scored first, but the Clippers came back and pulled away over the course of the game.
Toledo opened up the hit column in the top of the first inning. Out of the two spot, Jordy Mercer, who is on a rehab assignment, doubled to the right field corner, becoming the first runner of the game. Willi Castro would then join Mercer on the base paths, drawing a walk from the Clippers' starter, Shao-Ching Chiang. Both Mercer and Castro would move up on a groundball by Jeimer Candelario, putting runners at second and third with two outs for Toledo. However, Columbus would get out of the inning before Toledo would score, moving to the bottom of the first, scoreless.
On the mound for the Mud Hens to start was the left-handed Jose Manuel Fernandez for his first start with the Mud Hens. After recording two outs, the Clippers logged their first base runner with Brandon Barnes reaching on a throwing error in the field, with Barnes then stealing second base. Eric Haase then walked to put two on for Columbus, but a pop-up would end the first inning.
In the top of the third inning, Gregory Soto entered the game to pitch for Toledo. Soto replaced Fernandez, who tossed two scoreless innings, walking one while not allowing a hit.
In the top of the fourth, Mikie Mahtook began the inning by send a shot to left-center, but a leaping effort at the wall by Greg Allen would bring a loud out number one in the inning for Toledo, eventually leading to no runs in the half of the inning. The game would remain scoreless going into the bottom half of the fourth.
With two outs in the top of the fifth, Jacob Robson reached first on a throwing error by Columbus, also moving him up to second base. Mercer would then rip a double to left-center to score Robson, the first run of the game. Then, Castro would walk to put two runners on for the Mud Hens followed by a wild pitch, moving them up to second and third. However, a line drive to the second basemen would bring the inning to a close with Toledo leading 1-0.
In the Columbus half of the fifth inning, Mark Mathias would reach on balls before stealing second. Allen would then also walk to put two runners on for Columbus with two outs. Next up, Yu Chang knocked a double to left-center to score both Mathias and Allen to give Columbus a 2-1 lead.

With two outs in the inning, Ryan Flaherty gave a DeCaster pitch a ride over the right field wall, extending the Clippers' lead to 3-1.
The Clippers also made a pitching change, this one at the top of the seventh. Randy Valladares made his Triple-A debut, replacing the starter Chiang, who went six innings, giving up four hits and walking four while allowing one unearned run and striking out five. After getting Robson to fly out to deep center, Valladares hit Mercer to put a runner on for Toledo. However, a double-play ground ball would end the half of the inning.
Again, the Hens made a change on the bump at the start of the bottom of the seventh. Zac Reininger entered for DeCaster, who allowed one run on one hit while striking out two. Also, Willi Castro moved to shortstop with Pete Kozma replacing Jordy Mercer in the lineup and taking over at second.

A Barnes ground ball would become a fielder's choice force out at second with Barnes beating the throw at first while Mathias scored to give Columbus a 4-1 lead.
