Toledo Mud Hens News Release
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Toledo Mud Hens recorded 15 hits Monday but fell, 11-6, to the Columbus Clippers in the first of a four-game road trip.
Opening pitch from Huntington Field began an hour after the orginally scheduled time at 7:05 p.m. (EST) due to rain.
It's the first loss for the Mud Hens against their International League West Division rival this season since May 23.
Toledo now drops to 16-19 against divisional opponents.
Ryan Carpenter (2-5, 5.63 ERA) took the loss on 3.2 innings of work. The 28-year-old from Glendale, Arizona, coughed up nine hits and 11 earned runs in his third start against the Clippers this season.
Mitch Talbot, coming over from the Sugar Land Skeeters to the Cleveland Indians organization on June 5, got the start and lasted 5.1 innings for the win.
Jacob Robson, who batted leadoff, started off the first inning by extending his hit streak to 15 games.
The native of London, Ontario, has upped his batting average to more than 60 points dating back to June 8. He's also accumulated four doubles, two triples and seven RBIs throughout this run.
Columbus went ahead on a two-run shot over the left field wall from Ryan Flaherty in the second inning.
In four of his nine starts with the Mud Hens this season, Carpenter has given up six total home runs, with the most recent before Monday coming on May 19.
The Clippers would load the bases following Flaherty's at-bat and add four runs before the inning came to a close.
Seven runs are the most garnered by an opposing team in a single-inning this year.
Toledo ended the shutout in the third thanks to the seventh home run of the season for Jake Rogers. Four of Rogers' home runs have come in the last 13 days.
The 2016 Houston Astros third-round draft pick started his 27th game at catcher with the Mud Hens since being assigned from Double-A Erie on May 14.
Carpenter finished out the third after surrendering a two-run RBI single to Erie Stamets.
Carpenter, who's been apart of the Detroit Tigers organization since late-2017, has allowed four runs or more in just three starts in 2019.
He'd be relieved for John Schreiber, who pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, with Columbus leading 11-1 in the fourth.
Mark Mathias reached second on an RBI double before Adam Rosales singled to center to score both Mathias and Flaherty.
In the sixth, Toledo notched two runs as Jeimer Candelario doubled to the gap in right and Dustin Peterson singled on a ground ball to center.
Candelario is coming off his four-RBI outing Sunday in the win over Rochester while Peterson has totaled 14 RBIs against Columbus this season.
Bryan Garcia and Caleb Thielbar combined for one hit, one strikeout and zero earned runs in relief through the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
Toledo's quick rally in the ninth saw Candelario doubling again to right field and Peterson singling again to bring home Willi Castro for two runs.
The Mud Hens have now lost three in a row away from home.
What's Next:
Gregory Soto (0-1, 7.79 ERA) is probable to start Tuesday in the final of a two-game series against the Clippers.
Opening pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. (EST).
