Hawks Celebrate Another Alumni Call-Up
November 16, 2018 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa - Less than a week after former Black Hawks goaltender Cal Petersen made his NHL debut, one of his Waterloo teammates could be in position for the same opportunity tomorrow.
The Edmonton Oilers have recalled Black Hawks alumnus Patrick Russell from the Bakersfield Condors. Edmonton's next game is Saturday versus the Calgary Flames.
In 2013/14, Russell came to Waterloo for his first season of hockey in North America. The native of Denmark had appeared on national teams for his country's age group on several occasions, as well Linkoping of Sweden. In Waterloo, Russell shined, leading the Black Hawks and ranking fifth in the USHL with 29 goals. That count included ten power play scores and four game winners.
Waterloo claimed the 2013/14 Anderson Cup, earning a league-high 93 standings points, a team record. The Hawks also set a team record that winter with 44 victories. Besides Petersen and Russell, Brandon Montour (Anaheim Ducks) and Zach Sanford (St. Louis Blues) from the 2013/14 Black Hawks roster have appeared at the NHL level. Two others - Mark Friedman (Philadelphia Flyers) and Cameron Johnson (New Jersey Devils) - are currently skating in the American Hockey League on NHL contracts.
Russell advanced from Waterloo to St. Cloud State University. During two seasons with the Huskies, he recorded 63 points in 78 appearances. Russell was a point-per-game player (38 points in 38 games) as a sophomore. Following that season, he signed with the Oilers, and re-signed a second contract this summer after the entry-level agreement expired. Russell has played in Bakersfield since joining the Oilers organization.
Last summer, Russell had the opportunity to represent his country again during the IIHF Men's World Championships, which were hosted by Denmark.
Should Russell make his NHL debut, he would be the ninth former Hawk this season to appear at that level, joining Petersen, Montour, Sanford, Vinnie Hinostroza (Arizona Coyotes), Joe Pavelski (San Jose Sharks), Craig Smith (Nashville Predators), J.T. Brown (Minnesota Wild), and Jacob MacDonald (Florida Panthers).
