Hamilton Signs Steve Gainey

HAMILTON, ON - Hamilton Bulldogs General Manager Julien BriseBois announced today that the club has signed left wing Steve Gainey to an American Hockey League contract for the remainder of the 2008-2009 season. As per club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Gainey, 30, has been on a Professional Tryout (P.T.O) contract since January 5th and has played in 17 games with the Bulldogs this season recording four points (three goals, one assist) along with 22 penalty minutes. Before joining the Bulldogs this year, Gainey competed with the Idaho Steelheads of the ECHL where he recorded 30 points (11 goals, 19 assists) along with 36 penalty minutes in 33 games. Prior to this season, the 6-foot, 180-pound left wing had not played professional hockey since the 2005-2006 season when he split the year between the San Antonio Rampage and the Phoenix Coyotes of the NHL. The native of Montreal, Quebec played in 56 games with the Rampage earning 56 points (10 goals, 20 assists) along with 85 penalty minutes and 20 games with the Coyotes where he posted one assist and 20 penalty minutes. Gainey is a former 3rd round, 77th overall selection of the Dallas Stars in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft and is the son of Montreal Canadiens General Manager Bob Gainey.

The Hamilton Bulldogs continue their five-game road trip tonight with a 7:15 p.m. game in Norfolk against the Admirals.
